SPECIFICATIONfornning part of LettersPatent No. 278,30*?,dated May 1883.
i Application tiled January ll, 1883. (No model.)
To alt whom t't may concern y y A Be it known that I, DANIEL BECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, iu the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have `invented a new and useful Fire-Extinguishing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings. y
This invention relates to fire-extinguishing apparatus, and has for its object to provide a i simple, inexpensive, and efficient arrangement of pipes to be permanently disposed throughout the building, and adapted to distribute water over any or all parts of the building, as desired, without the necessity of the firemen entering the house.
` In the drawings, Figure l is a front view of a building having myimproved extinguishing apparatus. Fig. l2 is a vertical transverse sectional View of the saine. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view `on the line z z, Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views.
Beferringto the drawings, A designates the house to which myinvention is applied, which is constructed `in any desired manner, the one herein shown having three stories, B B2 B3,
` respectively, as shown.
The'compartme'nts C of theihouse have a series of pipes, D, arranged around the top of the room, and 'preferably conforming to the contour thereof. These series of pipes are perforated around their entire surfaces, as shown at E. The system ofpipesof eachtloor of the house can be independently arranged; but the pipes of each room are preferably independent of the pipes of any otherroom, as herein shown.' Thus from theseries of pipes in each room extend-s `a feed-pipe, F, to a main pipe, G, these feed-pipes being provided with cocks" H, by which the water can be turned on to any one room,` or independent section of pipes. The mainpipe G connects with, the Water-main I in the street, and is i provided with a suitably-arranged cock, J, for governin gythe feed of the water from the street-main,
The feed-pipe G is also provided with a coup` ling, K, between its cock J andthe feed-pipes F, by which coupling `hose from a `fire-engine can be readily connected tothe pipe G, and` force water with great power through the latter into any of the pipes` F that have their cocks open. Y .If desired,a reservoir, L, on top of the house, can be connected by a feed pipe, M,
with the independent systems of `perforated pipes, D, this feedpi pe M being provided with a cock,N, at each section of pipes D, and also with a cock, 0, at the reservoir. The gravity of the water in the reservoir will force itwith considerable power through the pipes. 6o The operation of my invention is obvious. y
In case of fire, the main cock J has only to be turned on, when the water from the streetmain will rush into the tire-extinguishing-apparatus feed-pipe G. Then,.by turning the desired cock El, the whole force ofthe water from `the streetinain will be directed to any certain room that may be the seat of the fire, and will be forced in all directions through the perforations in the'pipes D. By turning 7'o on all the cocks H the water cnn be caused to play into every room of the house simultane- `ously. Upon the arrival of the engines they the combination, with the building having the series of perforated pipes D, and provided with, the closet or compartment P' at the ground, of the feed-pipes F, extending from the series of pipes D down vertically and par- 9o allel into the closet, and eachprovided with a shut off cock, H, at its lower end in the closet, and the main feed-pipe G, arranged horizontally in the closet, into which the bottom ends` of the vertical parallel series of supplementary feed-pipes F open, said pipe G being provided vvith a cock, J, in the closet, and arranged, between its feed end and the series of pipes F, whereby all the supplementary pipesl F are brought into the horizontal pipe G in the Ioo closet, and the whole arrangement can only be operated from the lattenas set forth.
In testimonythat I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL BECK.
