FLY PAPER.

A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO THUM, OF GRANDRAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
FLY-PAPER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 'I, Or'ro Trauma citizen of the United States, and a resident of Grand Rapids, in. the. county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Im-' provement in Fly-Paper; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. l
Sticky fly-paper, as ordinarily manufactured, consists ot a sheet ofsized paper coated with an adhesive mixture of resin and castor-oil, a margin being left uncoated for convenience in separating the sheets. The coated sheets are in some casesfolded centrally, withuthe coated sides inward, andin lots of from twenty-five to one hundredpackedin boxes for the. trade. In warm weather the adhesivegcoating loses its consistency, soi'tensand runs freely, and its. tendency to spread is greatly increased by the pressure of the sheets packed closely together, theresult being that the coating is pressed out over the uncoated margin and ex- .udes between thesheets, soiling and sticking them together, and rendering them practically offiy-paper cannot be kept on hand, since the demand for it is seldom uniform, and unless sold at once it spoils and remains on the dealers hands.
My invention relates to an improved method its object is to prevent the running and spread ing of the adhesive coating under any circumstances, so that largequantiti'es of the paper may be packed and transported without deterioration and kept on hand.
lhe invention consists in surrounding the adhesive coating with material of such a nature that it will adhere slightly to an adjoining sheet, but will separate readily 'for use,
. and when the sheets are in contact will prevent the adhesive coating fromspreading.
The invention is illustrated in' the accompanying drawing, which shows a sheet of fly-paper in plan view.
In preparing my fiy-paper, I take a sheet of sized paper, A, and coat the central portion, B, with any proper adhesive composition, or, leaving a wide margin, a, on all sides. About twice the quantity of adhesive material needed forvone sheet is used, and the coating is preferably accomplished by suitable machinery. Around the margin oredge of the sticky materialI place-a strip or layer, a, of some com- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,294, dated Applicationfiled Febrnary27,1883. (No modelJ' May 22, 1883.
position which will adhere closely to paper, but maybe readily detached therefrom. This substance (preferably a resinous compound) entirely surrounds the sticky material on the sheet. Another prepared sheet is now placed face downward upon the first and immediately becomes coated with its properamount of adhesive material. At the same time the paper margins adhereto the band or strip it, so that all the sticky substance is inclosed within such strip. Under these circumstances itisimpossible for it to spread beyond the surrounding compound, and as there is a wide margin of paper outside the strip a the sheets may be readily separated, while such margin is always keptclean.
'1 do notlimit myselfto any particular manner of making and coating the fly-papeiy nor toany certain composition for that purpose, since various means and various compounds may be employed.
When coated in this manner any number of prepared sheets may be packed together for shipment and sale without danger ofthe sticky substance running or spreading at any temperature. It will ot'course be understood that the surrounding com pound is only slightly ad- I desire to disclaim the method alluded to as forming any part of my invention.
Having described my invention, I claim A sheet of fly-paper partially covered with a sticky composition, the latter being surrounded with a band or margin of less but still slightly adhesive material.
In testimony where fI have signed my name to this specification in thepresence of two subscribing witnesses.
OTTO THUM.
