Description
nited States Patent i ce STOCKING TOP Louise V. Ish, Clifton, N. J. Application February 26, 1952, Serial No. 273,407
6 Claims. (Cl. 66-172) The purpose of the straight seam stocking top or welt is to designate permanent exact areas where each matching or corresponding garter fastener of a garter garment such as a girdle, corset or garter belt is to be attached and the exact areas acting as guide marks in putting the stocking on the leg straight and then by this means the garter fasteners hold the stocking correctly in place so that the back seam will remain straight on the leg while the stocking is being worn.
One of the many forms that may be used to designate the exact areas to attach each matching or corresponding garter fastener of a garter garment is illustrated by heavy knitted vertical stripes in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is the -front View of the straight seam stocking top or welt and Figure 2 is the back view of the straight seam stocking top or welt showing heavy knitted vertical stripes in duplicate on both halves of the stocking top so that the stocking may be worn on the right or left leg.
In Figure 1 and Figure 2, the front heavy knitted stripes 1, the center side heavy knitted stripes 2, and the back heavy knitted stripes 3, are wider stripes than the front side heavy knitted vertical stripes 4, the back side heavy knitted vertical stripes S and the center front heavy knitted vertical stripe 9. The diierent width knitted stripes are alternated and so arranged to make it easier to identify the correct heavy knitted stripe for the corresponding and matching garter fastener and the wider stripes and placed Where there is greatest strain on the stocking while it is being worn. The front center heavy knitted stripe 9 running through the hem and down into the lower portion of the stocking 7 is an additional helpful guide mark in putting on the stocking straight and assuring that the back seam 8 of the stocking is iu its proper position on the leg.
In order that the stocking may be successfully worn on either the right or left leg, Figure 1 and Figure 2 show the heavy knit stripes for attaching garter fasteners in duplicate on both of the side halves of the stocking top 6. The straight seam stocking top 6, may be worn with garter garments that have two, three, four or more garter fasteners on each side of the garter garment.
There are many other ways these permanent exact areas may be indicated where the garter fasteners may be at- 2,782,618 Patented Feb. 26, 1957 tached to obtain the same results, such as: perforations, different stitch of the knit unlike the stitch of the knit than that of the remaining portion of the stocking top or welt, by reinforced areas, tabs, different color or shade than the color of the remaining portion of the stocking top, and by the process of printing, stamping or any other form which makes these exact areas unlike in appearance of the remaining portion of the stocking top or Welt.
I claim:
1. A stocking top or welt having exact permanent areas in appropriate and correct positions for each garter fastener of a garter garment placed circumferentially about the top or welt of the stocking with these exact permanent areas alternating in appearence from one to the other and in duplicate on both halves of the stocking top or welt with each half being the welt portion of the stocking from the median or center back seam to the median or center front of the stocking and these permanent areas being unlike the remaining portion of the stocking top or welt in appearance.
2. A stocking top or welt having exact permanent areas in appropriate and correct positions for each garter fastener of a garter garment placed circumferentially about the top or welt of the stocking with these areas alternating in appearance from one to another in duplicate on both halves of the stocking top or welt with each half being the welt portion of the stocking from the median or center back seam to the median or center front of the stocking with these exact permanent areas being indicated by a diierent stitch of the knit than that of the stitch of the knit of the remaining portion of the stocking top or welt.
3. A stocking top or welt according to claim 1 in which the areas are indicated by a diEerent color or shade of color than that of the remaining portion of the stocking top or welt.
4. A stocking top or welt according to claim 1 in which the areas are tabs.
5. A stocking top or welt according to claim 1 in which the areas are heavier knit vertical stripes than the knit of the remaining portion of the stocking top or welt.
6. A stocking top or welt according to claim 1 in which the areas are reinforced.
