SPECTFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,232, dated May'S, 1883.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE CLARK, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Button-Hook, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved button-hook which can be adjusted to occupy but very little space when not in use.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying I drawings, forming part of this specification, in

which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a longitudinal side elevation of my improved button-hook, showing the hook contained in the casing. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal side elevation of the same, showing the hook withdrawn, parts being broken out and others shown in section. Fig.3 is alongitudinal edge elevation, showing the hook contained in the casing. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line as m, Fig. 2.

The button-hook A, which is of the usual construction, is provided in the lower end of its shank with a notch, B,and below the notch with a cross-pin, (3, parallel with the prong of the hook and extending from opposite sides of the shank. The shank is inserted in a flattened casing, D, provided in each side with a longitudinal raised part, E, for receiving the shank of the hook. The cross-pin 0 passes into the flattened part of the casing to guide the shank of the hook and to prevent it from turning. The casing is provided in one edge and at the upper end with a slot, F, in which a latch, G, is pivoted, which has its inner edge beveled from near the upper inner corner toward the outer lower corner, as shown. That end of the cross-pi n O toward the beveled edge of the latch is beveled to fit against the said beveled edge. At that edge of the casing opposite the one provided with the slot a crosspin, H, is provided, against which the crosspin 0 strikes to prevent withdrawing the shank entirely from the casing. In place of providing the cross-pin H, part of the metal of the casing can be pressed inward to form a shoulder against which the cross-pin O can strike. 1f the shank B is withdrawn from the casing, the beveled end of the cross pin 0 strikes against the beveled edge of the latch and throws the lower part of the latch outward and the upper part inward and into the notch B,

whereby the latch will hold the shank of the hook in place and prevent pushing the same back into the casing, and the button-hook can then be used. If the shank of the hook is to be pressed back into the casing, the lower part of the latch G is pressed inward, whereby the upper part will be removed from the notch and will release the shank. The casing is fiat and occupies very little space, and does not require much material.

1. The combination, with the button-hook A, having a notch, B, of the casing D, and the latch Gr, pivoted thereto, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. A button-hook having the cross-pin G at or near its rear end, in combination with the casing D E, provided with a flattened part,

forming a groove, in which said pin slides, as

described.

3. In a button-hook case or holder, the combination of the pivoted latchGr and sliding cross-pin O, correspondingly beveled, whereby as the button-hook is withdrawn the cross- 0 pin causes the pivoted latch to lock in the notch of the button-hook, as described.

4. The combination, with the button-hook A, of the casing D, the cross-pin G, the latch G, and the cross-pin H, substantially as herein 9 5 shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
