PLANING MACHINE FOR TWO-SIDED PLANING IN A SINGLE OPERATION Filed April 25, 1955 lNV'NTO/Q F AmbeZany A ns.
United States Patent PLANING MACHINE FOR TWO-SIDED PLANING IN A SINGLE OPERATION Friedrich Wilhelm Hermann Ambelang, Flensburg, Germany Application April 25, 1955, Serial No. 503,617
1 Claim. (Cl. 144-117) This invention relates to planing machines, and more particularly to a planing machine for the two-sided planing of a workpiece in a single operation, in which the mechanism for planing the upright side is displaceable transversely to the longitudinal direction of the planning machine.
An object of the invention is to provide a planing machine for two-sided planing of a workpiece in a single operation comprising a jointing device displaceable transversely to the longitudinal direction of the planing machine, a planing table in said machine, a recess in said planing table, a cover plate shiftable in said recess and having an opening, a vertically operating tool provided above the cover plate and being adjustable in height and capable of passing through said opening.
It thereby becomes possible, in the case of timber of small height, to displace the vertical tool once or several times in vertical direction by a distance equal to the thickness of the workpiece, so that, little by little, the whole height of the tool can be utilized. Thereby, the periods during which the tool is in operation before it becomes blunt and must be exchanged for the purpose of sharpening, are considerably extended and a better utilization of working time is effected.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a planing machine;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line II-II of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the planing machine.
The wood planing machine having a planing table and a horizontal cutter spindle 2 arranged in known manner, is provided with a jointing device 1. Through this jointing device 1 a vertical shaft 6 extends, the lower end ice of which carries a tool 4 for planing a workpiece 5. The jointing device 1 is displaceable transversely to the longitudinal direction of the machine. A cover plate 8 is rigidly connected with the jointing device 1 by means of bolts 9 and is thus simultaneously displaceable with the jointing device 1, so that a channel 11 provided in the planing table 10 will be covered by the cover plate 8 in any position of the jointing device 1. The tool 4 is adjustable in height by displacing a sleeve 3 by means of a hand wheel 7. An opening in the cover plate 8 is so arranged, that the tool 4 can pass through when its height is being adjusted.
If the respective portions of the tool 4 in the case of planing relatively thin timber has become blunt, it is no longer necessary to have the tool exchanged. The tool can, according to the present invention, be vertically displaceable so that the operation can proceed by using its sharp portions until it has become blunt over its full height.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction will at once be apparent, and while there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
A wood planing machine for two-sided planing of a workpiece in a single operation comprising a jointing device displaceably transversely to the longitudinal direction of the planing machine and across the width of the machine, a planing table in said machine, elongated horizontal cutter means extending substantially the width of the said table, a recess in said planing table, a cover plate shiftable along said recess and having an opening, and a vertically operating elongated tool element provided above the cover plate, said tool element being adjustable in height and capable of passing through said opening.
