" i UNITED STATES PATENT ()FF cE. I
EMILE KRIPPENDORF, on wooD HAvEiv, ASSIGNOR TO THE LALA NoE &
eRosJEAN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
TEA OR COFFEE POT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,976, dated May 1, 1888.
i Application filed Fehruary12,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern j Be it known that I, EMILE KRIPPENDORF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wood Haven, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tea or Coffee Pots, of
or spout of like material for directing the outflow of. the contents; and it consistsin an improvedmethod of uniting the spout to the body of the vessel, the object of the invention being to produce a joint impervious to the inclosed liquid, thereby preventing the'liability to leakage common to joints asheretofore made and applied in this class ofutensils.
In teaand coffee pots of this character as heretofiore constructed the lip has in i most cases been securedbyifirst tbrming an outwardly-projecting flange upon ,tbe'portion of the edge of the lip which itis intended shall be attached to the body of the vessel, said flange being lapped and by rivets orsoldering directly secured thereto, the portion of the body of the vessel inclosed within said flanged edges of the lip having previously'been perforate'd with asuitable number of small holes,
' vessel before theattachment of the lip.
"of rivets in unitingthe lip to the body of the vessel,.andforms a double seamed or lapped joint which is absolutelywater-tight and is not afl'ected by variations of temperature.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is view in elevation ofa side of the lip anda portion of the body of the vessel, showing the [former before its attachment to thelatter.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the bodyof the Fig. 3 is an inside elevation of the lip; and Figs.
lip in difl'erent stages of attachment.
In these figures, A represents the :main body of the vessel, which is'formed in the usual manner of iron or other sheet metal. strainer formed from the side of the bodyA, being severed therefrom at three of its sides, as shown, but left uncut at its upper portion. The strainer'is shown as sprung slightly outward from the body A, which may preferably 4 and 5 are sectiona-lplan views, showing th Bisa be caused by. contracting the edges of the body adjacent to those of the strainer. i
The usual lip,O, for directing the outflow of the contents of the vessel, is provided with a groove or indentation, 0, extending throughout the edges D E F, and from which projects a flange,f. The flanged edges D E F'should correspond in shape with the strainer B.
y The lip G is attached to the body A by first inserting the free end of the strainer B within the interior of the groove 0 of the lip C, and by forcing the latter upward the flange fmay be made tofit tightly between the edges of the strainer B and the adjacent edges of the body A. The parts will then assume the positions shown in Fig. 4. The inwardly-projectin g flange f is next bent down closely over the inner edge of the body A,asshown in Fig. 5,forming a double lapped or seamed joint, which is then coinpressed, by means of a die or otherwise, so as to be perfectly water-tight in every part. The completed vessel may be finished by tiuning, enameling, or otherwise, as desired. The joint thus formed, owing to its elasticity, may be subjected to expansion and contraction without injury, while its broad bearing-surfaces and re-entering angles and the absence of rivets render it absolutely water tight under all the ordinary conditions of use, thus avoiding the liability to leakage or corrosion.
I claim as my iuvention- 1. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the body of a tea or coffee pot or other like vessel, a strainer forming an or coffee pot or other like vessel, of a strainer In testimony whereof I have hereunto subforrning an integral part of the side of said scribed my name this 8th day of February, A.
"essel, but partially-separated therefrom, and D. 1883.
adapted to be clamped within the joint of at- EMILE KRI-PPENDO-RF. tachlnent of the lip 0r spout with said body of i Witnesses:
the Vessel, substantially as hereinbefore set JAMES COOHRAN,
