' HINGE FOR-SLIDING AND ROLLING GATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,949, dated May 1, 18183.
Application filed October 4, 1882. (No model.)
the county of Mercer and State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Innprovements in Hinges for Sliding and Rolling Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 4
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvementsin hinges for sliding and rolling gates; and the invention consists in novel features oi' construction and combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims hereto annexed.
Referring to the accompanying.. drawings, Figure l'represelnts a side .elevation ofrrny improved hinge Fig. 2, a vertical section through the same, showing its attachment to the gate-post; Figs. 3 and 4, detail views to be hereinafter referred to.
In the drawings, A represents the gate-post, to which my improved hinge is secured, and B an open metallic roller-frame, composed of the two half-sections b b', the right-angled portions `b2 b3 at the upper and lower ends thereof 'overlapping each other to form closetting joints.` i
Within the frame B is journaled the roller G, having circularrecessed sides c c, for the reception of the circularhubs c c', (cast integral with theghaltsections ofthe frame,) and a central opening, c2, through said roller for the reception of the journal c3, cast integralV with or otherwise secured to one of `said hubs, so that when the two half-sections of the frame B are rigidly secured together bythe headed screw-bolts Dand nuts d the roller C, upon which the gate is suspended, will "also be secured in position, as shown in Figs. l and-3. Right-,angled strengthening ribs d d are formed on the outside of the half-sections of the rollerframe B.
The metallic roller-frame B is pivotally connected at its upper and lower ends to the gatepost A in the following manner: The upper or top end of said frame is provided with a hole, e, (formed by semicircular recesses in the ends of the right-angled portions b2 b3 of the haltsections,) for the reception of the hooked end e ot' a bent screw-bolt, E, which passes obliquely through the gate-post A, and secured by a nut and washer, e2 and e3..
F represents a supporting bracket or brace, having a bifurcated end, f, adapted to embrace the corner and adjacent sides of the gate-post. This bracket or brace is provided at its other end with a right-angled plate, f', cast integral therewith, and having au upwardly-projecting headed lug,f2, around the shankj'3 of which tit the recessed ends ofthe right-angled portions?)2 h3 of the half-sections at the lower end of the roller-frame, thus forming the hinge or journal upon which the lower end of rollerframe turns. The right-angled plate f has also a down wardly-projecting lug, g, between which and the side of the bracket or brace fits the square shank g of the headed screw-bolt G, which also passes obliquely through the gate-post, and secured by the nut and washer q2 and g3, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
The above-described manner of pivotally connecting the roller-frame to the gate-post gives said frame a rigid and lirm support, and prevents the gate from sagging when arranged in position to be supported upon the roller C.
All the parts are made of malleable or cast iron, and can be easily and quickly connected together and to the gate-post.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The metallic roller-fra me B, composed of the half-sections b b', with right-angled por tions b2 b3, interior hubs, ofc', and journal c3, in combination with the roller C, having recessed sides and a central opening through it for the reception of said hubs and journal, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described. t
2. The con1bination,with the roller-frame B, formed in half-sections b b', of the brace or bracket F, having a bifurcated end, j', and a right-angled plate, f', provided with aheaded lug, f2, and lug, g, and the headed screw-bolt Gr,- whereby the lower end of the roller-frame is journaled and secured to the post, snbstan tially as specified.
3. The combination,wth the rollerlrame B,
