OXIDIZING-FURNACVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,175, dated April 24, 1883.

The object of this invention is to facilitate and cheapen the operati-ou of oxidizing ores.
The invention is embodied in the construction and combination ot' parts, as hereinatter described and claimed, whereby hot air andthe gaseous products of combustion taken from the ore-chamber and forced into the space beneath the ore-grate, and from which (it being otherwise closed) they are forced up through the tilecovered grate whereon the ore rests, a

The ore is introduced into the chamber D through hoppers G, placed in openings in the top of the furnace, and is-spread evenly over the tiles F by means of a hoe, rake, or other tool introduced through doors H in the front Steam is forced into the lower compartment ot' the chamber D through a pipe, I. Hot air is drawn from the upper part of the chamber D, through a pipe, J, by a fan-blower orothcrsuitable means, and is forced into the the lower compartment of the said chamber D through a pipe, K. The steam and hot air rise through the grate E, the tiles F, and the ore spread upon the said tiles, so that theore will be oxidized quickly and with a small amount of tire. The hot air thatis not drawn through the pipe J passes over the top of the division-wall L, passes down through the end chamber, M, which forms the mouth ofthe tlue, and passes through the ilue N in the lower part of the furnace to the stack O.
l am aware that steam has been introduced beneath a grate and allowed to pass up through ore resting thereon, also that the gaseous products ot' combustion have been forced in a continuous current by means of a blower over a charge of ore, and returned in a flue beneath it; butin these cases the object was rather to 'prevent than promote oxidation, since very little oxygen was allowed to enter the converting-chamber, so that the ore might be quickly reduced to a metallic state.
In my invention l combine a steam-convey-` ing pipe und blower-with a furnace aud-foregrate in such manner that the steam and hot air and gaseous products ot' combustion are com mingled and l'orced up through the charge ot' ore, whereby the oxidation, rather than reduction, ot' the latter is produced.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a fire place and grate with aroasting-chamber provided with a grate, E, and tiles F, covering the same, a flue-chamber, M, connected with the chimney, as described, a pipe for conveying steam below the grate E, and pipes J and K, connected by a fan exhaust and blower, as and for the purposes described.
