SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,990, dated April 17, 1883.
Application filed December 5, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. OARPER, of Buda, in the county of Bureau and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciiication, and in which- Figure `l is a bottom plan view of my improved harrow. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of one of the crossbeams,and Fig. 4 is a similar view of one ofthe tooth-bars.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to harrows; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the cross-beams, and B the toothbeams.
The harrow consists of two or more panels, linked at their front ends to a cross-bar, C, to the center of which the draft is attached.
The cross-beams are composed of two bars bolted together, and their meeting surfaces are provided at intervals with cylindrical recesses D, those in the upper bar registering with those in the lower bar, forming bearings for the reduced parts of the tooth-bars.
The tooth-bars are reduced at the places E, where they are held between the two parts of the cross-beams, and are cylindrical, so as to turn in the bearings. The teeth P are fastened in the tooth-bars and form oblique rows, each tooth setting a little aside from the one in the row before it. From the four ends of the two outer cross-beams in each panel go two brace-rods, F F, crossing each other and serving to strengthen the harrow. Upon the rear tooth-bar is fastened a handle or lever, G, having a spring-lock, H, which locks into notches in a segmental rack, I, fastened upon the cross-beam. By means of this lever the rear tooth-bar may be turned in its bearings, so as to give the teeth any pitch desired, and

the other bars are turned from the rear bar by means ofzigzag bent rods J,which pass through eyes K upon the under side of the toothbars one upon-each side of the panel. This rod is bent twice at each eye, so as to form a part, L, which is parallel with the tooth-bar and passes through the eye K, while the portions M of the rod are bent obliquely to the part L, so as to reach from one side of one eye to the other side of the next eye, all the eyes being in a row. In this manner, by tilting lever G, the teeth may be adjusted to any desired pitch, causing them to cut into the soil or drag over the same as they are tilted with their points forward or rearward, according to the condition of the soil to be harrowed. The ends of the rods J are provided with links N, by which the barrow-panels are attached to the crossbar C.
I am aware that harrows have been constructed with rods bent to form eyes, engaging eyes upon the pivoted tooth-bars and operating the same; but the bending of these rods, to which the draft is attached,and which consequently are subjected to a severe strain to form eyes, weakens them cousiderably,while by bending them in zigzag forms and passing the parallelV parts through the eyes they are weakened less and are easier inserted.

In a barrow of the described class, the combination of the pivoted tooth-bars B, having eyes K upon their under side, the zigzag bent rods J, passing with their parallel parts L through the eyes K, and means for adjusting the tooth-bars at any desired angle, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
