W. HAWKS. HAND CORN PLANTER.-
Patented Apr. 10,1883.
N. PETERS4 Phmaumgmpvw. wnsmugam a c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM HAWKS, OF MILLINGTON, MICHIGAN.
HAND CORN-PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 275,486, dated April 10, 1883.
Application filed December 13, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom t't may concern: A
Beit known that l, WILLIAM HAwKs, of Millington, inthe county ot' Tuscola and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand Corn-Planters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full', clear, and exact description thereof, reference' being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of hand corn-planters.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of parts and the combinations and operations ot' such parts, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed. j
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved corn-planter, the lower part thereof being in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective sectional view of a portion of the lower part of the device. Fig. 3 is a detached and enlarged perspective view of the operating-lever and slide.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a sheet-metal pipe or tube provided with a cap, B,'to which is secured the handle (J. D is an opening near the top of this cylinder, through which such cylinder is charged with. the seed, and this opening may be provided with a slide or other cover, as may be most preferred. In opposite sides of the wall of this cylinder, and
.coincident with each other, are two slots, a,
" cylinder in such position, as shown in Fig. l,
as to likely sweep over the top of the slide as the latter is reciprocated, acting as a strike, on the slide being withdrawn, to prevent the withdrawal of any of the grain, except such as will be found in the openingb. This slide is actuated in its reciprocation by means of the lever G, the lower end of which is pivotally secured to the wings H at d. In order to convert the radial movement of the lever G into a reciprocating motion of the slide E the latter is attached to such lever by means of the joint I, constructed as shown in Fig. 3.
J is ablock, of circular form, which lits into the cylinder, the upper face of such block being upon the lower line of the slots a in such cylinder, and forms the bottom of the grainopening b in the slide. A throat, e, is cut in one side of this block, which allows the grain face of the wings H, delivers it in such scat tered condition to the ground between the jaws L, one of which is attached to the lower end of said block, while the other is attached to the lower end of the pivoted lever G.
By means of a corn-planter constructed as described, the tendency, as the slides are usually secured to the lever G, to follow the radial motions of said lever is avoided, and the radial motion of said lever communicates a horizontal motion to the slide, and the grain is delivered to the ground with each grain separated from its fellow suflciently that in taking root neither interferes with the other. I am aware of Patent No. 144,566, dated November 11, 1873, and No. 103,153, dated May 17, 1870, and do not therefore desire to broadly claim such construction as my invention, but limit myself to the combination of peculiar parts pointed out in the claims.
What l claim as my invention is- 1. In a hand corn-planter, the combination of the cylinder A, having an opening, D, a cap, B, and handle C at one end, and a wedgeshaped spreader, K, and block J secured in the other end, the latter projecting to form a means for attaching one of the'jaws L, substan tially as described.
2. In a hand corn-planter, the combination of the cylinder A, having an opening, D, a cap, B, and a handle, C, at.one end, and a wedge-shaped spreader, K, and block J secured in the other end, the latter projecting to form a means for attaching one of the jaws L, substantially as described, with the lever G, slide E, pivoted to said lever G, wings H, jaws L, throat c, and brush F, all constructed and arranged substantiallyl as shown and described.
In witness that I claim the above as my invention I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of November, 1882.
WILLIAM HAWKS.
