SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 275,353, dated April 10, 1883.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID S. BUGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middleville, county of Barry, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful I mnrovements in Cherry-Pitters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an improvement in cherry-pitters, and has for its object to effect the ready and efficient pitting of the fruit; and it consists in the combination and construction of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In carrying out my invention I employ preferably a tray-shaped receptacle, A, through which, in front of its securing-bracket a, is

made a row of apertures, b, into which the` cherries or fruit are fed, they moving in grooves or channels b', made in the bottom of the tra-y or receptacle and leading t0 the said apertures.

B is a piece of leather or flexible material arranged over the lower ends of the apertures b, and held against the bottom of the receptacle A by means of a metallic frame, c, and nails driven through the frame and leather and into the receptacle-bottoni. The leather B is slitted at coincident points with the apertures b, to permit the passage through it of the seed While the pitting operation is being performed. 'lhe foregoing lettered parts are well known to the art.

C O are the obliquely-arranged uprights secured to the forward end of the tray, one at each side thereof.

D is a shaft having its bearings in the uprights U. This shaft carries a series of arms, E, having bearded inner ends, said arms being curved and arranged to operate coincidently with the position of the apertures b. One of said arms has a downward-curved and horizontal extension, c', whereby a connection between the shaft D and the crank-shaft c, having handle c and supported in the upper ends of the uprights O, is effected by means of the connecting-rod or pitman d, looped around a right-angled extension of the arm-extension c and around a crank or bail ofthe shaft c.

F is a frame, with its side bars fastened to the upper edge of the tray A at a point a little forward ot' a vertical plane passing through the apertures b of the tray A, said frame having a series of spaced-apart fingers or cleaners, F', up between which the pitters or arms E rise, with the adhering fruit, after the removal of the seed, to cause the pushing of the fruit ofi" said arms, whence it falls upon the hoard or incline G, and from thence passes into a suitably-placed vessel. Said board or incline is fastened to the bottom of the receptacle or tray A about iu thev same vertical plane with the lingers or cleaners F'.

I am aware that it is old to employ a tray or receptacle having a grooved bottom provided with iexibly-covered openings or apertures, said flexible cover being slitted coincidently with the apertures, combined with a cleaner, pitter-arms, and operating mechanism.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a cherry-pitter, the combination, with the tray or receptacle A, having seed-apertures in its bottom, and a lingered cleaner, F F', of the bearded pitterarms E, fixed to the shaft D, bearing in the inclined uprights O C, one ot' said arms having an extension, c', the rod d, and the handled crank-shaft e c', substantially as and for the purpose specified.
