SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,057, dated April 3, 1883,

(ModeL) T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN G. MARTIN, of Tuscarora, Elko county, Nevada, have invented a new and Improved Miners Candlestick, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to produce a new and improved candlestick combined with other implements used by miners in preparing blasts, which candlestick and implements can be folded very compactly, so that they can be carried in a pocket very conveniently and cannot injure the person.

The invention consistsin aspiing-i'rame provided with flanges at the end of one shank and having a knife-blade, a prong, &c., pivoted to the other shank, which flanges hold the same in position either opened or closed.

The invention further consists in a pivoted hook provided at its pivoted end with ajaw, which, with ajaw on the spring-frame, serves to clinch a cap on a fuse.

The invention further consists in a latch for locking the pivoted hook in position either when opened or closed.

The invention also consists in the construc tion of parts and combination of the same, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, inwhich similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

A loop-shaped spring-frame, A, is constructed at the open end so that long shanks A A, which rest against each other and are pressed each by the spring ofthe frame, will he formed.

To the end of one shank, A, a knife-blade, B, and a sticker or long prong, G, are pivoted on the inner side. The other prong, A is provided at the end with top and bottom flanges, a, projecting toward the shank A and adapted to pass over the top and bottom edges of the same and of the pivoted ends of the blade B and sticker 0, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. A spring-loop, D, adapted to receive a candle, projects from the outer surface of the shank A a short distance from the free end of the same. A book, E,is pivoted to the inner surface of the prong A in such a manner that the hook can pass within the enlarged part of the frame A, and beyond the pivot the shank of the hookis provided with a curved prong, having a jaw, F. A fixed jaw, G, corresponding in position with the jaw F, projects from the lower edge of the shank A the under edge of the shank of the hook E, at or near the middle of the same, in such a man ner thatitswings laterally-that is,sidewiseon thesaid book. The said latch His provided on its outer end with a hook adapted to catch on a hook-projection, g, on the lower edge of the shank A The latch H is also provided at its free end with a shoulder, h, adapted to rest on the upper edge of the shank A when the hook E is raised. The latch H is provided with a lug or projection, I, against which a finger can be rested to move the latch.

The instrument is used as follows: A candle is placed in the loop D. The shanks A and A are separated sufliciently to let the blade B and the sticker 0 drop, and then the blade B is pushed back and the sticker 0 is swung upward to project from theend of the frame A, and the same is then driven or pushed into a post, 850. The flangesa hold the blade B, and the sticker 0 is placed either within the frame A or projecting from the same, and prevents them from doubling over. If the holder is to be suspended,the'sticker is folded into the frame and the hook E is swung up ward and is held in place by the latch H, which is rested against the upper edge of the shank A The end of the hook E is forced into a log or post. Vhen the hook E is folded in the frame A it is held in place by moving the A latch, H, is pivoted to.

latch H sidewise, so that the hook d catches on the hook g. The jaws F and G are used to clinch a cap on a fuse; and for this purpose a fuse is passed into the cap, which is placed between thejaws, which are then pressed together and force part of the tube of the cap into the fuse. The knife-blade B is used to cut fuses, and for other suitable purposes.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the spring-frame A, having flanges a a at the end of one shank, of the blade and prongs pivoted to the opposite shank, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with the spring-frame A, provided with a candle-holdingloop,D,and

having flanges a at the end of the opposite shank, of the knife-blade B and the sticker (3, pivoted to the opposite shank, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination, with a spring-frame to which a knife-blade and a prong are pivoted, of a hook pivoted to one shank and a latch pivoted to said hook for holding it in the desired position, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. 4. The combination, with the spring-frame A, provided with a hookprojection, g, of the pivoted hook E and the latch H, pivoted to the hook E, and provided at its end with a hook, (I, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

5. The combination, with the spring-frame A, provided with a hook-projection, g, of the latch H, pivoted to the hook E, and provided at its end with a hook, g, and a shoulder, h, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

6. The combination, with the spring-frame A,provided with ajaw, G, projecting from its edge, of the pivoted hook E, provided with a jaw, F, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
