UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID A. DIXON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO 0. S. OSBORNE 8t 00., OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
LAP SHAVING AND-SPL|TTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 274,921, dated April 3, 1883.
- Application filed Novemberd, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID A. DIXON, a citizen ol' the United States, residing-at St. Louis,
in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lap Shaving and Splitting Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto I make and usethe same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specificatiom The object of this invention is to facilitate and perfect the operation of shaving off at a bevel leather straps, whereby a perfect lap or splice is attained, useful in the manufacture of bridle-halters and other strap-work.
The inventionconsists in the arrangement and combination of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the figures, Figure 1 isa verticle section of a machine embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the parts of said machine; and Fig. 3 is a bed is secured the skiving-knife c, andjn front of the latter, working in adjustable bearings c, is arranged a roller, d, said bearings being provided with slots y,which receive set-screws, as shown. By these means the device can be gaged to cut any required thickness of strap. The action of the eccentric portion b is limited by a screw, h, or other device, which passes upward through the bed, as will be apparent. The roller-bearings are attached to the frame by strong springs f, which allow a certain amount of play tothe roller, but hold the same hard against the leather and prevent the latter from being improperly cut. Q
In operating the device the strap is laid on the eccentric surface, which latter is rotated by means of the handle b, the said strap being carried under the roller d and cut by the blade 0. The surface of the portion 1), being eccentric in itsrelation to the pivotal center b, causes the blade to give a beveled cut to the strap, as will be well understood.
Having thus described my invention, What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination, theframe a, pivoted segment b, roller (1, and cutter c, the whole being arranged and combined substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth and shown.
2. In combination, the frame a, eccentric portion b, roller cl, operating in adjustable bearings, and blade 0, arranged and combined substantially as and for thepurposes set forth and shown.
3. In combination, the frame a, eccentric portion 1), roller d, cutter c, and limiting portion It, all arranged and operating for the-purposes set forth. I
4. In combination, the frame a, eccentricallypivoted portion 0, roller 01, bearings e, spring f, and limiting portion It, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of October, 1882.
DAVID A. DIXON. Witnesses: I
