PHILIP HUFELAND, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO PETER WIEDERER, OF SAME PLACE.
MIRROR AND PICTURE SUPPORT.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,773, dated March 27, 1883.
Application filed January 11, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP HUFELAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mirror and Picture Supports, of which the following is a specification. v V
This invention relates to fixtures for attachment to the frames of mirrors orother articles for supporting the latter on a suitable stand or on the wall; and it consists in the-novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, whereby a mirror or other article adjustable to different angles is adapt ed to automatically preserve the position to which it may be adjusted, whether on astand or on the wall. I
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure Us a perspective view, showing a mirror resting on a stand. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the fixture as it appears when the mirror is .hung on a wall. Fig.3 shows the fixture on a larger scale than in the previous figures, and partly in section.

The letter A designates a frame containing my improved fixture, which is composed of a supporting-arm, B, an attaohingarm, G, pivoted to the supporting-arm at one "end, and of a friction device connecting the free end of the attaching-arm to the supporting-arm. Said friction device is composed of a flexible metallic strap, D, which is wound on a springreel, E, and thence extends over a fixed roller, F, of wood or other suitable material, to the frame, thereel being mounted in suitable bearings on the supporting-arm and the roller being fixed thereto at a point inward from the reel. The spring of the reel E acts thereon to wind the strap D upon it, and hence the strap has a tendency to draw the attaching-arm 0 toward the supporting-arm. The attachingarm 0 is fastened to the back of the frame, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the latter can be adjusted to different angles by swinging it on the pivot s, which forms the junction between the arms. When the frame has been brought to the desired angle or. position the strap D, which shares the movement of the frame or the supporting-arm O, as the case may be, is held stationary by its contact with the roller F, and thus causes the mirror to preserve its angle. 7 p
The SIlDPOrting-arm Bis provided at its free end with asuspension eye or loop, 0, so that such.
arm may be used as a brace for sustaining the frame on a stand, as shown in Fig. 1, or may be hung to a nail or other object on the wall for supporting the frame at that place, as indicated in Fig.2. 7
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the supporting and the attaching arms, pivoted or hinged together at one end, with a spring-reel, a strap wound on the reel and connecting the free end of the attaching-arm to the supporting-arm, and the fixed pulley, around which the strap passes, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
