This invention relates to an apparatus such as is worn by a person who has undergone a colostomy, wherein a permanent opening is formed in the abdominal wallto communicate with the colon and through which excrement is extruded by the normal digestive process. Such an apparatus normally includes a receptacle of some form which is supported over the abdominal opening to receive matter being discharged therefrom.` i

The objects of the present invention are to provide a device of this nature which may be worn with comfort; to provide means whereby an effective seal is formed between the device and the body of the wearer, and to provide a material receiving bag which may be removed and disposed of without fear of soiling the clothing of the wearer. These and otherobjects will appear as the specication proceeds.

In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure. The numeral 1 indicates generally a support member consisting of an annular plate 2 having a' central opening 3. Above the opening the plate is provided with a forwardly projecting flange or hood 4, thepurpose of which will hereinafter appear. Extending from the sides of the plate are substantially U-shaped loops 6 and the kdevice is provided with a waist encircling adjustable band S fitted with hooks 9 which engage said loops.

Secured to the rear face of the plate 2 is a pad 10 of foam rubber or similar soft resilient material and having a central opening 11 in alignment with the opening 3 of said plate. The pad is rectangular in cross section, see particularly Figure 3, and is adapted to be engaged and deformed on its rear face by a washer 14 of rubber or the like. The washer is `provided with a vertical flange 15 and a forwardly projecting horizontal iiange 16 and the intersection of the two iianges is thickened and rounded as at 17.

The device is provided with an outer supporting sack 20, preferably of plastic, which is fitted at its upper edge `with front and rear elastic bands 21. Each of the bands 21 is fitted with small hooks 2.3 which are adapted to be connected to the loops 6 so that the sack may be sus-` pended from the plate 2 with the mouth of the sack somewhat constricted, as shown in Figure 2. The sack is adapted to enclose a` disposable bag 25, also preferably of plastic or similar material, which bag is of sulicient length to project some distance above the supporting sack.

' The device is prepared for use by placing a bag within the sack and threading the upper edge of said bag through the openings 3` and 11.l The rim 26 of the bag is then folded into contact with the outer periphery of the pad 10, see Figure 2. The washer 14 is iitted in position by entering its flange 16 into the opening 11 of the pad so that the bag is securelygripped therebetween.

In Figure 2 the abdominal wall is shown in dotted line at 30 with the opening being indicated by the numeral 31. vThe member 1 is placed against the wall as shownV `2,746,456 Patented May 22, 1956 and the band 8 is passed around the waist and secured to the loops 6. By adjusting the band 8, the member 1 is supported against the wall' 30 with suicient pressure to slightly indent said wall and to distort the washer 14 to the extent that a seal is formed between the washer and the wall: The thickened portion V17 vof the washer `serves to compress` the inner corner of the pad 1,0 as shown at X in Figure 2, so that no possibility exists of ice fecal matter iinding its way pastthe` bag and the adjoining surface of the washer. As matter is extruded into the bag its flow is not obstructed by the wearers clothing pressing against the device since the hood 4 supports said clothing beyond the plane of the plate 2. Whenl it becomes necessary to dispose of the bag 25 it is a simple task to remove the bag and replace it with another as above described.

The thickened and rounded portion 1,7 of the washer 14 and the resilient thrust of the inner corner of the pad causes a greater inward pressure to be applied to the body wall Strat the periphery of the abdominal opening than elsewhere, thereby making it possible to form a perfect seal vbetween the washer 14 and the lskin without unduly tightening the waist band 8.

What I claim as my invention is: i

1. A colostomy device comprising an annular member adapted to be supported over the opening in the abdominal wall, said member having a resilient annular pad secured to its rear face, a washer coacting with said pad to form a seal, a bag, the open end of said bag being inserted through the opening of the resilient pad, said j dominal wall, vsaid member having a resilient annular` pad `secured to its rear face, a washerinterposed between said pad and the abdominal wall, said washer having a thickened portion adjacent its Vinner periphery adapted to form a seal, a bag, the open end `of said bag being inserted through the opening ofthe resilient pad, said bag being gripped in open position between said pad and the washer when the device is pressed against the wearers body. v
