STE-AM-ACTUATED' VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming, part of Letters Patent No. 274,247, dated. March 20, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, L. SANDIDGE ALLISON,
, HARRY J OHN, and THOMAS E. EVANS, all of Hazleton, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Actuated Valves for Steam-Pumps, of which the follow ing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to prevent the main valve from striking at the end ofits stroke and to regulate the speed of its operation, so that the pumpvalves shall seat themselves without jar, all as hereinafter described 1 and claimed.

A represents a steam-cylinder of a directacting pump,and B the piston-head orplun ger.
O is the steam-chest, containing aslide-va-lve, a, fitted for movementby pistons b b. The cover of the chest 0 is formed with steam-passages o c for admission of steam behind the pistons b, and also with an exhaust-passage, d, and is also formed as a seat for a slide-valve, e, of ordinary character, that is contained within a secondary steam-chest. The stem f of the valve e, passing through one side of the steam-chamber, is connected to one end of a lever, g, which is hung upon the outer end of. the valve-stem h of the main valve 0.. Through a stuffing-box in the head of the main cylinder A extends a slide-rod, 'i, the inner end of which projects into the cylinder a sufficient distance to be struck by the piston B, when the latter reaches near the end of its stroke, so that the outer end of the rod 73 will strike the lower end of the lever g. The arrange ment will be the same at each end of the steamcylinder A, but is only shown at one end in the drawings.
The valves being in position as shown, and
piston B, moving in direction A of its arrow, comes in contact with rod 4., and moves valve 0 in direction of the arrow until arrested by stop 70, when the main valve a will be moved to the middle position by the continued movement otlever g. The pump will then stop until the steam, acting on one piston b of valve a, completes the throw of that valve. ment carries lever g to its outward position, (shown by dotted lines.) and places the corresponding lever at the other end of the cylinder in the inner position for being moved by return of'plunger B.
The exhaust-passage d of the secondary steam-chest connects, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, with the main exhaust l, and in this passageis fitted a valve, m, arranged for movement by a hand-wheel, n, for regulating the exhaust from the main valve, so that it may be made to move more or lessgradually in order to cushion the valve and give time for the pump-valves to seat without jar.
We are aware that it'is not new to use a knocker on the rod which connects the pistons of a steam and a pump cylinder for the purpose of actuating a slide-valve, or to operate a steam-ch est valve by a slide-rod, (passing through the chest,) levers, and pins, the latter passing into the steam-cylinder and moved by the piston thereof; but
This last move- What we do claim as new and of our invention is-- The combination, with the Tods i, movable in the steam-cylinder A, and the lovers 9, bearing with'one end against said rods, of the valve-stemf, pivoted to the other end of said lever, and the main-valve stem h, pivoted to said lever between its ends, whereby the valves of the main and auxiliary chests will be op- .erated, as described.
