1 Claim. (Cl. 19-67) This invention relates to a lint saver attachment and, more specifically, a device for attachment to a lint cleaner which prevents the unnecessary loss of lint and effects large savings of cotton.
An object of this invention is to provide a lint saver attachment for lint cleaners that replaces the usual control bar assembly for retaining the cotton in correct relation to the cylindrical saw assembly thereby eliminating the usual loss of the lint in present lint cleaners.
Another object of this invention is to provide a lint saver attachment for lint cleaners that is provided with a generally concave face fitting the contor of the saws thereby positioning the cotton and guiding the cotton during action of the saws for saving lint and efiecting a saving of cotton.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a lint saver attachment for lint cleaners that is simple in construction, easy to install, eflicient in operation, well adapted for its intended purposes, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
These, together with other objects and advantageswhich will become subsequently apparent, reside'in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a lint cleaner having the lint saver attachment of the present invention installed therein wherein portions of the lint cleaner are broken away in section in order to illustrate the structural details and relationships of the various componentparts of the present invention and the lint cleaner on which the lint saver of the present invention is attached;
Figure 2 is a detailed sectional view showing the lint saver attachment of the present invention and its relationship to the periphery of the saws;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the lint saver attachment of the present invention;
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing one of the end brackets for securing the lint saver attachment of the present invention to a lint cleaner.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, it will be seen that the numeral generally designates the lint saver attachment for a lint cleaner generally designated by the numeral 12. The lint. cleaner 12 includes a brush assembly 14 rotating on bearings "16 and a saw cylinder assembly 18 rota-ting on suitable bearings supporting the saw shaft 20. A plurality of stripper bar assemblies 22 are provided for cleaning the lint cotton and the saws 18 are provided with a plurality of teeth 24 that carry the cot-ton into contact with bars 24 to clean the lint after which it is removed with the brush assembly 14. Feeder rolls 26 and 28 are provided for the saws 18 and the lint saver attachment 10 of the present invention is positioned between the feeder roll 26 and the first of the bars 22 for positioning the cotton against the saw teeth 24.
The lint saver attachment 10 includes a generally elongated plate 30 having a concave surface for closely fitting 2,740,993 Patented Apr. 10, 1956 around the saw teeth 24. One edge of the plate 30 is provided with an upturned right angular portion 32 and the other edge of the plate 30 is provided with an upwardly curving and reversely turned edge 34. Adjacent to each end of the upturned portion 32 and the reversely curved portion 34 is provided an elongated closed slot 36 for receiving fastening bolt 38 extending therethrough. The fastening bolts 38 engage threaded apertures in an inwardly extending flange 40 on each end of mounting bracket 42. The inwardly extending flanges 40 are provided with an upturning end portion 44 and a reversely curved end portion 46 that is formed to fit into the inner contour of the plate 30 and the upturned edge 32 together with the reversely curved portion 34. The entire flange 40 of the bracket 42 is positioned at right angles thereto. The for ward face of the flange 40 also is provided with a concave surface for fitting the rear convex surface of the central portion of the plate 30 thereby providing a rigid support and rigid end pieces for the lint saver attachment 10 thereby rigidifying the lint saver attachment 10 and providing the means for easy attachment to the end walls of the lint cleaner 12 by providing fastening apertures 48 therein wherein suitable fastening means may be provided for securing the bracket 42 to the end walls of the lint cleaner 12.
The lint saver attachment 10 of the present invention may be employed on lint cleaners 12 and substituted for the control bar that is normally positioned between the smooth feed roller 26 and the stripper bars 22. The concave forward surface of the plate 30 forming the main body portion of the lint saver attachment closely approximates the contour of the outer edges of the saw teeth 24 wherein the saw teeth 24 substantially pass under the plate 30 in a very close spaced relation thereby assuring the correct action of the saws 18 in relation to the cotton lint thereby effecting the positioning of the cotton on the saws. The lint saver attachment 10 does not change the normal operation of the lint cleaner and is easy to install on existing lint cleaners thereby effecting a saving in the lint cotton and preventing the loss of lint usually occurring with the use of the presently available lint cleaners. Obviously, the lint saver attachment may be constructed of any suitable materials meeting the necessary requirements for a device of this nature wherein it is rigid and reinforced by the right angular brackets 42 wherein the inturned flanges 40 on the brackets 42 provide a strengthening reinforcement for the ends of the plate 30 thereby retaining the plate 30 in close proximity to the outer periphery of the saws 18. The resultant efficiency in the lint cleaning operation will quickly defray the cost incidental to the provision and installation of the lint saver attachment 10 of the present invention wherein more lint cotton is produced during a given amount of time and using a given amount of cotton.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling Within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A lint saver attachment for lint cleaners having rotatable saws comprising an elongated plate, a bracket on each end of said plate for attaching the ends of the plate to the lint cleaner, said plate having a concave outer surface for positioning closely adjacent a portion of the periphery of the saws, said brackets having an integral perpendicularly extending flange about a portion of its periphery for attachment to the inner surface of the plate,
3 said plate having one longitudinal edge formed in perpendicular relation to the main :body of the plate, and the other longitudinal edge i eversely curved for forming a smooth guide for the cotton, each of said flanges on the brackets having an upturned edge and ,a Teversely curved edge conforming'to and engaging the inner surface of the plate, said plate having longitudinal slots therein, and -fastening members extending through the slots and engaging the brackets for adjustably mounting the plate on the brackets.
