Description

May 19,-1953 M. R. HoAG PICTURE HANGING BRACKET Filed Iarch 1, 1949 fnl/ended: Mar/'on RHOa/g )fra/wey Patented May 19, 1953 UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims. (Cl. 248-429) This invention relates to hanger devices for the frames of pictures, mirrors or the like.
Pictures, mirrors, and the like have heretofore been usually hung on walls by means of a cord or wire having its opposite ends secured to the frame of the picture or mirror at opposite sides thereof and the cord or wire engaged with a hook or nail intermediate the ends thereof.
rIhis means of hanging picture frames, while being cheap and quick and easy of application, presents several objections, the principal ones of which are as follows:
Frames supported on walls by this means are very unstable and as a result thereof they readily assume positions out of the perpendicular under the iniiuence of slight vibrations and the more particular persons nd it necessary to be constantly readjusting their picture frames.
Another objection to this usual means of hanging picture frame is that the cord or wire often stretches with the result thatthe suspension hook or nail becomes visible over the tops of the framesI which is unsightly and presents an untidy appearance.
While devices have heretofore been proposed in an effort to overcome the labove noted objections, they have not been altogether satisfactory, particularly from the standpoint of cost, ease of application, and eiciency and dependability in operation.
It is accordingly a primary object of the present invention to provide hanger devices for frames of pictures, mirrors, and the like, whereby the frames may be securely and accurately positioned on walls without any attendant danger of same becoming displaced from their properly hung positions.
A further object of the invention is to provide frame hanger devices which are wholly concealed behind the frame and which are capable of being quickly and easily applied to the frame by a comparatively unskilled person.
A still further object of the invention is to provide frame hanger devices which are highly simple in construction and which are capable of being manufactured at relatively low cost.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent in the course of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a broken rear face elevation of a. picture frame with a picture mounted therein and showing a pair of the improved hanger devices secured thereto.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view in the plane of l-ine 2`2` on Fig. 1 and showing in addition a portion of a Wall having a supporting nail disposed therein.
' Fig. 3 is a top edge view of oney of the hanger devices; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the hanger devices.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the improved hangerdevice is designated in itsentirety as I0 and as indicated in Fig. 1, a pair of such devices are required for each frame to be hung. The device I0 comprises a single unitary strip of relatively thin sheet metal and is formed by a simple stamping operation.
The device I0 includes a central body portion II and a pair of supporting feet I2, one at each end of the device and the feet `I2 are disposed in a plane which is parallel with and in slightly spaced relation tok the plane of the body portion II thereby providing a space s between the body portion andthe picture backing b when the device is applied to the frame as in Figs. 1 and 2.
The body portion II is cut out at one edge thereof in the provision of a pair of fastener receiving notches I3 which are symmetrically disposed relative to the transverse center line of the device.
The supporting feet I2 are provided with apertures I4 for the reception of nails n for securing the devices to the frame F and the free end edges of the feet I2 are disposed at an angle of 45 to the parallel opposite edges of the device and also at right angles to each other whereby the devices may be positioned diagonally of the upper frame corners at an angle of 45 to either adjacent edge of the frame.
With a pair of the devices thus positioned, a notch I3 in each thereof will be vertically disposed and with their apices equally spaced from the top and opposite sides of the frame whereby the frame will be accurately suspended upon engagement of a nail or other wall-supported fastener in each notch I3.
With the devices thus positioned on the frame, a pair of nails N are driven into the wall W on a horizontal line and lat spaced distances equal to the distance between the vertical medians of the notches I3. The frame is then positioned with the back thereof toward the Wall and is lowered for entry of nails N into the notches I3 and due to the offsetting of the body portion I I from the supporting feet I2 the nail heads will rest within the space s With portions thereof engaged with the rear wall of the body portion I I as is clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 whereby the frame will be positively maintained in accurately hung position.
With this construction, the frame may be easily removed for cleaning or other purposes and then replaced with the assurance that it will be accurately suspended on the Wall in the absence of any visible suspension means.
It is to be particularly noted that the symmetrical construction of the devices l0 renders same readily interchangeable. Thus upon consideration of 1, it will be seen that the two devices I may be interchanged in which event the loivermost notches E3 will `be in nail-receiving position. This interchangeable construction is highly important for the reason that any selected device may be used on any corner of the frame.
While I have disclosed my invention in accordance with a single structural embodiment thereof, such is to be considered as illustrative only, and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being defined in the sub-joined claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is:
1. A frame hanging device comprising an elongated relatively Wide metallic strip including co planar end porti-ons providing supporting feet, and a relatively long plane central portion laterally offset from the end portions, the strip having parallel 'side edges and end edges Which oonverge toward one side edge at an angle oi 45 thereto, whereby one side edge is longer than the other, the material of the strip being cut out inwardly from the central portion of the longer side edge providing therefor a pair of fastener receiving notches spaced longitudinally of the strip and said notches being dened by side edges merging into api'ces in equally spaced relation fromthe transverse center line of the strip.
2. A frame hanging device comprising an elongated relatively Wide strip having opposed .4. parallel side edges and end edges disposed at an acute angle to the side edges, and a V-shaped fastener receiving notch in the strip opening through one side edge thereof, the notch beine,r so disposed that a line 4bisecting the angle formed by the sides of the notch is perpendicular to one end edge and parallel to the other end edge.
3. A frame hanging device comprising an elongated relatively Wide strip having opposed parallel side edges and-opposediparallel end edges disposed at an angle of degrees to the side edges, a pair of fastener receiving notches in said strip opening through one side edge thereof, said notchesfeach being defined by angularly disposed edges, the-notches being so disposed that lines bisecting the vangles formed by said last edges are at an angle of 45 degrees to the said opposite parallel edges, and intersect in a point spaced from the side edge through which said notches open, corresponding edges of said notches intersectingin a vertex disposed between said opposite side edges, and said lastinalned edges, being so disposedthat va line bisecting the angle formed thereby passes through said vertex and said point.
