1 Claim.

This invention relates to breast supporting garments and pertains, more particularly, to a brassiere including improved means adapted for facilitating the formation of well-formed breast receiving pockets.

One object of the present invention is to provide means in a brassiere construction whereby a standard size garment is adapted to be worn more comfortably and with improved fit by women whose breasts may be intermediate standard brassiere sizes.

Another object of the present invention is to provide means in a brassiere construction whereby tightness or binding is prevented and a satisfactory fit is maintained upon swelling of a Womans breasts, which is a more or less normal periodic occurrence.

Another object of the present invention is to provide means in a brassiere construction which permits a maximum of physical movements by a wearer without thereby causing discomfort or affecting a desired fit.

Still another object of the present invention is to provide a combined breast and diaphragm supporting garment which at all times and during all bodily movements maintains a comfortable and fashionable fit.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:

Fig. l is a front perspective view of a garment made in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention.

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged front elevational view illustrating details of the first embodiment.

Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the lines 3-3 in Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary enlarged front elevational view of a first modified form of the first embodiment.

Fig. 5 is a fragmentary enlarged front elevational view of a second modified form of the first embodiment.

Fig. 6 is a front perspective view of a second embodiment of the invention.

Now, with reference to the drawings in more detail and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, it will be seen that the first embodiment of the invention provides a pair of back panels 10 which are adapted to be fastened together, by any suitable hooking means, behind a wearers back. Provided to be stitched to said back panels ID at side seams I l is a pair of breast pocket panels l2. Said pocket panels are commonly stitched at the front of the garment or at the point of breast cleavage to a vertical reinforcing strip l3.

Each of the pocket panels I2 is formed of a single blank of material configured to provide an inner panel portion I4 and at the bottom thereof adjacent panel portions M and I 5. To shape the pocket panels, the panel portions [4 and [5 are overlapped and drawn inward to form a suitable breast cup or pocket 16. In such relationship, the panel portions I5 become the outer panel portions and the panel portions l4 become the inner panel portions.

Said inner panel portion !4 is arranged to be yieldably interconnected with a related one of the said back panels I0 at a side seam II by a pair of parallel and spaced apart elastic tapes ll. Another elastic tape I8 which is folded upon itself and stitched at the fold. line thereof to the said vertical reinforcing strip [3 is stitched at its spaced apart extremities to the said outer panel portion l5.

It will be seen that the just described arrangement permits the said pocket forming inner and outer panel portions to be yieldingly movable laterally relative to each other to thereby effect the dimensions and capacities of the said breast pockets. It will be seen, also, that the provision of elastic interconnecting means will permit the mentioned movement of the panel portions during physical bodily movements which cause binding and discomfort to a wearer of a brassiere of ordinary construction.

Shoulder straps IQ of the usual type are also provided for assisting in the support of the above described embodiment.

A modified form of the first embodiment which is seen in Fig. 4 is similar to the said first embodiment but differs therefrom in that an outer panel portion [5a of each breast pocket panel [2c is yieldingly interconnected with a vertical reinforcing strip I3a by an elastic band 20 which is of any suitable configuration and preferably of the quadrangular shape shown in said Fig. 4.

A second modification of the first embodiment is seen in Fig. 5 and differs from said first embodiment in that an inner panel portion N of a breast pocket panel l2 is yieldingly connected to a back panel lll at a seam H by an elastic band 2|, and an outer panel portion l5 of said pocket panel l2 is yieldingly connected to a vertical reinforcing strip W by a suitable elastic band 22.

Now, as seen in Fig. 6, a second embodiment of the invention is also contemplated. Herein is provided a pair of back panels 25 which are adapted to be fastened in a suitable manner behind a womans back. Stitched to the back panels 25 at the tops. of the vertical side edges at seams 26 are breast pocket panels 21. Said pocket panels are commonly stitc d to a vertical reinforcing strip 2 8 and each is configured to provide an inner and an outer panel portion 29 and 39, respectively, which panel portions when arranged overlappingly form a breast cup or pocket 3|. Also provided is a front panel "32 which has its top edge free of any connection with the bottom edges of the breast panel 2?.

Elastic tapes 33 which are folded upon themselves and which are similar in construction and operation to the tapes L8 of the first form of the invention, connect the free edges of the outer panel portions til-to the reinforced seamed'edges of the breast panels. The free edges of the inher panel portions 29 are secured to the front edges of the back panels 25 by elastic tapes 34 and 35. The tapes 34 are relatively narrow, but the tapes 35 are considerably wider and are eX- tended downward to the bottom edges of the back panels 25 and the front panel 32. The rear vertical edges of the tapes 35 are seamed to the front edges of the back panels 25 and the side vertical edges of the front panel 32 are seamed to the front vertical edges of those tapes 35 be low the inner panel portions 29.

The usual shoulder straps 36 are connected between the top edges of the back panels :25 and the pocket panels '21, as is generally known in the art to which the present invention pertains.

It will be seen that the Just described arrangement provides breast supporting pockets which are suitablyformed in the same manner as those provided in the first form of the invention, and additionally provides diaphragm supporting 4 means which is also effective for anchoring the center of the brassiere construction.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

In a garment of the class described, a breast pocket panel having vertical inner and outer edges and separate panel portions at the bottom thereof, said panel portions being superimposed extensions of the pocket panel extendaing .across one .another to shape said pocket panel, said panel portions having outer substantially vertical edges facing said inner and outer edges of said pocket panel, parallel elongated elastic strips secured between the outer vertical edge of the panel portion facing the outer vertical :edge of said pocket panel and the outer vertical edge of said pocket panel, an elongated elastic strip folded in half to be -V-shaped and positioned with its fold at and secured to the inner vertical edge vof said pocket panel, said :folded strip having spaced free ends extended toward and secured to the vertical edge of the panel portion facing $1116 inner vertical edge of said pocket panel.
