Description
UNITED STATES IUYQEN C) `FI osoAR M. ANDREWS, on HECLA woRKs,` NEwiYoRK, AssIGNon` l'ro l p SAME PLAGE. l 1.3`
BLIND-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters PatentNo. 26,319, dated Novemberi29 l To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR M. ANDREWS, `of Hecla Works, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Blind-Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thisspecification, in which i Figure 1, represents a transverse vertical section of the frame of a blind, the blind or shutter being open and fastened `according to my invention. Fig. 2, is a horizontal section of the same. Figs. 3` and 4, are similar viewsto Figsl and 2, respectively, representinga modification of my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures. i
The object of this invention is to fasten a blind orshutter, when the same is open, in such a manner, that the fastening can be reached without sticking the head and body away out of the window, and my `invention consists in arranging on that side of the frame to which the blind or shutter is hinged, a rotarycam of particular construction, that catches into a hook formed by that part of the butt hinge, which is secured to the blind or by a separate piece secured to the blind in any convenient place.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe it. 'i
The shutter or blind A, is attached to the frameB, by means of hinges C, C', in the usual manner. The upper hinge C', is constructed precisely like the hinges which are now in general use, but that `part of the lower hinge C, which is secured to the shutter, is furnished with a hook a, that catches over a cam D, which is attached. to the side of the frame B. The cam D, is wedge shaped so that it forces the blind or shutter up against the wall and it rotates on a pivot l), in a casing o, which is mortised into or otherwise rigidly attached to the side of the frame.. The `front pariwof` said cani is. so1` .i heavy that the same byreason of itsown 3 gravity is always keptin theproper"` posi.` tion to catch over the hook a, and the inner side of the hook a,-forms`fan inclined@ ane,
so that when the blind orlshutter isthrow open the cam slides up lsaidlinclined plan `and catches over. the hook asfsoonvas the shutter has reached its extreme position close" `up to the wall. Alugfor handle e, serves to raise the cam soas to; allow the shutter l closed and a stop f, prevents saidlcamw eing drawn back too far sol that the `same "by reasonof the superior gravity ofits" front end sinks down again. ready to catch over `the hook, as soon as the handrelaxes. y Instead of attaching the hook a, to apart of the hinge, a separate hook a,`may. be s cured to any convenient placeon` the shu y between the hinges,as.clearly shownin Fig 3 and 4. The form of the hook a', islsimil to the hood a, its inner end forming and clined plane, causing it `to `raise the .ca when the shutter is opened anditojcatch. .b hind the hook when theshutterhasreached its eXtreme position 'close up to the. wal In either case the shutter can :be opened by pushing it back as nsualfand it canV be closed by raising the cam` D, and pulling the blind or shutter in, all. ofwhich can be done.. raising the window but little and` thrusting the arm outjust` far .enough to reach the cam and to pull the shutter in. i
