My invention relates to improvements in hand Winches.
The objects of the invention are to provide a winch in which the brake is automatically applied and is held engaged during the winding oi the cable onto the drum, and to provide a one way clutch between the brake and the drum, so that the actuating oi a drum racking lever may serve to slacken or release the brake. A further object is to provide a winch with a lever for low gear hauling in of the cable, and a crank for high gear or direct gear hauling in of said cable, whereby cable slack may be taken up rapidly by a rotary crank motion and heavy loads may be moved by a reciprocating lever motion at appropriate mechanical advantage.

In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each ligure.
The numeral l indicates generally a frame having side plates 2 and 3, which are held in spaced relation by transverse members it. Journaled between the plates 2 and 3 is a shaft 6 upon which a winding drum l is secured.
The winding drum l is provided with flanges 3 and 9, and the flange S is provided with gear teeth to form a bull gear l l. on the shaft 5 is a brake drum l2 having on the inner side of its peripheral rim lil a plurality of ratchet teeth l5 which are adapted to be engaged by one or more spring actuated pawls Il which are pivotally mounted upon the outer face of the flange 3 of the winding drum l. A brake band I8 surrounds the brake drum l2 and is anchored upon a toggle l!) which is pivot ally mounted upon a short shaft 2t. The shaft 2U is journaled in the side plate 3 and is fitted with a brake lever 22 which is urged in one direction by an adjustable spring 23, the said spring holding the brake drum i2 against the pull of the load on the hauling cable 2li attached to the winding drum l'.
A shaft 2S is journaled in a suitable bearing in the side plate 3 and is fitted with a pinion 28 at one end and a ratchet wheel 29 at its opposite end. The lever 3d is rockingly mounted upon the shaft 2S and is tted with a pawl 3l Rotatably mounted whichl is adapted to vengage theY teeth of the ratchet wheel to` turn it in an anti-.clockwise direction, as viewed linigures 2 and fi. The brake lever 22 and the racking lever 3E! both swing in the same plane, so that by moving the lever-*36 in a clockwise direction from the solid line position, as shown in'Figure 2, the lever 30 will engage the brake lever 22 to rock it and release the brake. When the racking lever is swung in a clockwise direction, the pawl 3l rides over the teeth of the ratchet Wheel 29 in the usual way, but as the lever movement is changed, the pawl engages the wheel 29 to rotate the pinion 28.
Rockingly mounted on the brake lever 22 is a finger 32, which is urged in a clockwise direction by a spring 33. A stop 34 is provided on the brake lever to limit the swing of the finger incidental to the pull of the spring 33. The nger 32 when at rest against the stop 34, vwith the brake lever at rest in its normal position as shown in Figures 1 and 2, is projected slightly under the pawl 3l, so that any movement of the racking lever 30 beyond the full line position,
i will cause the finger 32, assisted by its spring 33, to slip under the pawl 3| and raise it out of engagement with its ratchet wheel 2%. When the racking lever 39 is moved further in a clockwise direction, it will cause the brake lever 22 to move in the same direction to release the brake and allow the winding drum and the brake drum to turn as a unit in an anti-clockwise direction and pay out its cable.
It will be noticed that the radius about which the finger 32 swings as the brake lever moves to release the brake band, is greater than the radius about which the fulcrum of the pawl 3l swings and that the pawl whilst still disengaged from its ratchet wheel 29, will pull the finger 32 down below its stop 3d to compensate for the difference of radii above referred to.
The winding drum shaft has secured to it adjacent the plate 3 a ratchet wheel 38 which is adapted to be engaged by a pawl 39 which is rockingly mounted upon a hand crank lili. The crank 40 is freely rotatable about the shaft 6 and the pawl is so pivoted thereto that the pawl will engage the ratchet wheel when the crank is being turned in a clockwise direction and will dsengage said wheel when the crank is allowed to hang freely in a downward position from the shaft.
In operation, the cable slack can be taken up freely by rotating the crank 40 in a clockwise direction, the load will be held stationary at any time when the hand crank 40 and the racking lever 30 are released and the load can be hauled in in low gear by reciprocating the lever 30. The load can be slackened off and the cable paid out by the simple expedient of moving the lever 39 clockwise beyond the full line position, as shown in Figure 2.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A winch comprising a frame, a shaft journalled in the frame, a Winding drum secured upon the shaft, a one way clutch having a, driving and a driven part, one of said parts being secured to the shaft and the second of said parts being connected to rotate with the drum, a brake means carried by the frame normally holding one clutch part against rotation, a winding lever mounted on said frame, a drive means including a pawl and ratchet for turning the drum in a Winding direction, said winding lever actuating said drive means when the winding lever is moved in one direction, said Winding lever when moved in an opposite direction engaging a portion of said brake means to prevent the functioning of the pawl and ratchet drive and to release the brake.

A Winch comprising a frame, a shaft journalled on the frame, a Winding drum secured upon the shaft, a one Way clutch having a driving and a driven part, one of said parts being secured to the shaft and the second of said parts being connected to rotate with the drum, a brake carried by the frame normally holding one clutch part against rotation, a brake lever normally holding the brake in engaged position, a winding lever means on said frame and having a pawl and ratchet drive for turning the drum in a winding direction when the Winding lever is moved in one direction, said winding lever being adapted when moved in an opposite direction to engage the brake lever to release the normally held clutch part and to prevent the functioning of the pawl and ratchet drive.
