4 Claims.
This invention relates to that class of womens garments known as foundation garments.
One of the important objects of this invention s to provide in a garment of the kind described a means whereby -a fashioningy effect and positive control will be exerted in connection with the lower abdomen, fleshy part of the hips, the hips, the groin, and the posterior of the wearer, this being accomplished by the manner of construction of the front, back, and side panels of the garment in conjunction with the placement of the overlaid or incorporated elastic tapes which are related to the several panels of the garment.
Another object of this invention is to provide a foundation garment embodying the combination of non-elastic and elastic panels so arranged and fashioned as to produce a confining effect in the desired location without discomfort to the wearer.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
1n the drawings:
Figure 1 is a detailed front elevation of a garment constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a detailed rear elevation of the garment.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevation on an enlarged scale of the garment.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral I designates generally a front central panel which is formed of flexible material having a non-elastic characteristic. The front panel I0 has secured by zigzag stitching II to the longitudinal edges thereof front elastic panels I2 and I3 which have a characteristic of horizontal stretchability.
The elastic panels I2 and I3 have secured to the outer longitudinal edges thereof by zigzag stitching I4 side panels I5 and I6, and the connection between the panel I2 and the panel I5 is interrupted from the upper edge thereof to a point spaced downwardly from the upper edge by means of interengaging fastening means I'I. A back panel I8 having a non-elastic characteristic is disposed at the back central portion of the garment, and the back panel I8 has secured to the longitudinal edges thereof panels I9 and 20 which have a horizontal elastic characteristic, and the elastic panels I9 and 20 are secured by zigzag stitching 2I to the panels I5 and I6.
The rear panel I8 is shorter in .length than. the rear elastic panels I9 `and 2B, and an elastic panel 22 is secured to the upper edge of the non-elastic panel I8 and is secured along the vertical edges thereof to the elastic panelsIS and 2E. l
The front elastic panels I2 and I3 have secured thereto pairs of outwardly divergent reinforcing elastic tapes or bands 23 which are ysecured to the panels I2 and I3 by zigzag stitching 24. An intermediate reinforcing tape or band 25 extends between the divergent tapes or bands 23, and the convergent ends of the tapes 23 are secured to the outer edge of the front central panel Ill. The outer divergent ends of the tapes. 23` are secured to the non-elastic side panels I5 and I6.
Pairs of oppositely disposed outwardly divergent reinforcing tapes or bands 26 are secured at their inner convergent ends to the central nonelastic panel I8, and the outer divergent ends of the tapes or bands 26 are secured to the side nonelastic panels I5 and I6, An intermediate reinforcing tape or band 21 is secured to the elastic panels I9 and 20 between the members of each pair of divergent tapes or strips 26.
The pairs of obliquely disposed or outwardly divergent reinforcing tapes provides a means for placing additional resistance at predetermined points in the elastic panels so as to further assist in producing a confining action to the wearer.
As herein disclosed the front and rear central panels are formed of rigid or non-elastic material, but it will be understood that, if desired, the garment may be formed of a non-elastic front panel and a back panel having a vertical stretch. It will also |be understood that the elastic panels disposed at the front and back of the garment shown in Figures 1 and 2 which are formed of material having a horizontal stretch may be formed of material having a two-way stretch.
What is claimed is:
1. A girdle or body confining and controlling garment or the like, comprising a garment for encompassing the lower portion of the body of a wearer, said garment having front, rear, and side panels of non-elastic material, and panels of elastic material positioned between each side ,panel and the front panel and the rear panel and of said elastic panels, and strips of ,elastic se,-Y
cured to adjacent edges of said front panel and side panels, and said rear panel and said sideV panels, extending across the intervening elastic panel and diverging from a point adjacent the center of said front panel and the center of said rear panel toward points adjacent the extremities of said side panels.
3. A girdle or body confining and controlling garment or the like, comprising a garment for encompassing the lower portion of the body of the wearer, said garment having front, rear and side panels, and additional panels having a different elastic characteristic positloned between each side panel and the front panel and each side panel and the rear panel and having means whereby on the flexing of said garment said elastic panels have a greater amount of elastic resistance in that portion of the garment which encompasses the hips and upper thighs of the wearer whereby the garment will exert a confining and fashioning restraint on the lower abdomen and hips of the wearer, said means comprising strips of elastic fastened at one end to the front panel and at their outer ends to the adja- 4 cent side panel and extending across the intervening additional panels, said strips being disposed obliquely relative to said front panel and said side panels, and converging from said side panels toward said front panel.
4. A girdle or body confining and controlling garment or the like, comprising a garment for encompassing the lower portion of the body of the wearer, said garment having front, rear and side panels, and additional panels having a diferent elastic characteristic positioned between each side panel and the front panel and each side panel and the rear panel and having means whereby on the flexing of said garment said elastic panels have a greater amount of elastic resistance in that portion of the garment which encompasses ,the hips and upper thighs of the wearer whereby the garment will exert a confining and fashioning restraint on the lower abdomen and hips of the wearer, said means comprising strips of elastic fastened at one end to the rear panel and at their other ends to the adjacent side panel and extending across the intervening additional panels, said strips being disposed obliquely relative to said rear panel, and said side panels, and converging from said side panels toward said rear panel.
