Description
Mawr/b: M? /M W Filed June 3, 1949 Feb. 10, 1953 SOFA ADAPTED To BE CONVERTED INT0 Two sUPERPosED BEDS Patented Feb. 10, 1953 OFFICE SOFA ADAPTED TO BE CONVERTED INTO TWO SUPERPOSED BEDS Johan Ekeberg, Oslo, Norway Application J une 3, 1949, Serial No. 97,036 In Norway June 11, 1948 3 Claims. (Cl. 5-12) The present invention has for its object a sofa which is adapted to be converted into a double bedstead with superposed beds.
This is obtained in accordance with the invention by connecting the back cushion of the sofa at each end with the back frame by means of pivoted arms in such a manner that it may be moved upwards and forwards and also pivoted about its longitudinal axis, so that the back of the cushion will form the upper side of the upper bed.
The pivoted arms are adapted to be locked in their raised position, and the arm rests are pivoted about a point near the front end so that they may be turned about their pivots, so as to form supports -lor the upper bedstead.
On the drawing an embodiment of the invention is diagraminatically illustrated.
Fig. 1 shows a side view of the sofa in normal position, whereas Fig. 2 is a similar side view of the sofa after it has been converted into two superposed beds. 4
l indicates the back cushion and 2 the stationary back frame.
To each end of the stationary back frame there is hinged an arm 4, and the free ends of these arms are pivotally connected with opposite ends of the back cushion I.
The arm Mi is provided with a nose 5 which in the raised position oi the arm illustrated on Fig. 2 is brought in engagement wtih a spring actuated pawl 6.
On Fig. 2 it will be seen how the sofa is converted into two superposed bedsteads, the back cushion l being iirst moved forwards and upwards as indicated in dotted lines, whereupon it is turned about its longitudinal axis and lifted to its upper position as indicated in full lines.
The arm rests 'l may be pivoted about hinges 8 so as to form supports for the front edge of the back cushion I in the raised position of the same by being brought in engagement with eyelets 9 or the like.
Between a suitable point of the pivoted arms 4 and the rear edge of the sofa seat Il) there 2 is placed a chain ll or the like, which serves: to lift the sofa seat into horizontal position when the sofa. is converted into a bedstead.
I claim:
l. A sofa comprising a stationary back frame, arms pivotally connected at one end thereof to said back frame at each end of said frame and in proximity to the top thereof, a back cushion pivotally connected to the opposite ends of Said arms, an abutment on that end of each saidIl arm which is connected to said back frame, a
pawl on said stationary back frame for coaction with said abutment, said back cushion being movable forward and upward and pivotal about its longitudinal axis for raising into a substantially horizontal position above said sofa, said abutment and said pawl constituting a locking mechanism for said arms when said back cushion is in raised position.
2. A sofa as claimed in claim l, arm restson said sofa pivotally connected thereto adjacent their front ends, fixing means on said back cushion, said arm rests coacting with said fixing means when said back cushion is in raised position and forming supports therefor.
3. A sofa as claimed in claim 2 and including a sofa seat, chains connected between said arms and the rear of said sofa seat whereby upon raising said back cushion said sofa seat is moved into a substantially horizontal position.
