This invention relates to portable garment supporting devices and more particularly to garment supporting and trouser stretching devices.

It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a compact, useful and easily operable garment supporting. device which may be placed within a room, since it takes up only relatively little space and is adapted to receive and hold a variety of articles of wearing apparel and accessories.

The invention is hereinafter explained in greater detail and with reference to the attached drawing in which one embodiment of the invention is shown.

Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the device made in accordance with this invention.

Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along lines 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a detailed view partly in section and taken along lines 3-3 of Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section and drawn to an enlarged scale showing various positions of the device seen in Fig. 1.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing there is shown in Fig, 1 a garment supporting and trouser stretching device having upright supports or standards I which are interconnected to each other at their base members 2, the latter being preferably provided with casters 3 in order to facilitate displacement of the device. Supports I are further connected by transverse members 4 and 5 extending in the respective upper and central portions of the device and further by transverse members 6 extending into the base members 2. These tranverse bars 6 are provided with metallic ledges I for the purpose of supporting the shoes of a person placed on said transverse members 6.

Intermediate the upper ends of the upright supports I there is fitted a recessed member 8 forming a tray which is adapted to receive accessories for wearing apparel, etc., and is further adapted to brace the upper ends of upright supports or standards I. Connected to this tray rearwardly thereof is a coat hanger 9 which is sufliciently spaced from the upright standards I to avoid any crushing of a coat when suspended from garment hanger 9. Between transverse members 4 and 5 connecting the upright standards or supports I with each other there extend stationary plates I9 which carry between them and said upright supports I sidewardly extending studs I I.

In the lower part of the sid or upright supports there are disposed spindles I2 on opposite sides of which are pivotally supported the bearing pieces I3 and I4 with an adjacent end I5 from which extend the ends of coil springs I8 which surround the spindles I2 (see Fig. 3). Clamping plates I1 and I9 extend between these bearing pieces I3, I4 and are, respectively, connected thereto. Between bearing pieces I3 extends movable transverse clamp plate IT which, on account of the spring pressure obtained through springs I6, has the tendency to normally assume an inclined forward position with respect to clamp plate I9 as shown in Fig. 4 in which stop pins I8 connected to standards I are disposed to abut against said clamp plate IT, to prevent further forward movement of plate I'I against plate I9.

With bearing pieces I4 is connected the aforesaid transverse plate I9 which carries the vertical and swingable plates 20 which in turn terminate in transverse bar 2|. Plates I1 and I9 form clamping means for receiving one end of a pair of trousers as will be later explained. Stop members 22 are fixed at the inner face of the upright supports I to limit the swinging movement of the clamping plate assembly I9-29-2I as is evident from Fig. 4 (shown in full lines).

On the vertical movable plates 29 are, respectively, pivotally affixed the coupling levers 23 provided with hooks 24 whereby the vertical plates 20 may be coupled to abut against plates It by the engagement of the hooks 24 of levers 23 with the side studs I I.

The automatic trouser stretcher device according to the invention is operated in the following manner:

The vertical plates 20 together with transverse members I9 and 2I are first disengaged from fixed plates I9 and are brought to open position (designated by I in Fig. 4) so that the trouser stretcher is in fully open position.

After the trousers have been placed in position on plate 29 so as to extend over the transverse member 2 I, it will be apparent that clamp means I9 first approaches during its swinging movement about spindles I2 and toward clamp means ll said movable transverse clamp means ['1 in such manner that assembly I920-2l assumes another or median position (position II in Fig. 4). In this position and due to the force of the springs I6 on bearings l3 and I4 clamping plates or means I9 and I! will be pressed together so that the parts of the trousers placed therebetween will be held and clamped in compressed condition. Subsequently thereto a further rotary motion is performed about spindles I2 whereby the assembly I9--202l together with plate I1 assumes a closed position (as indicated by III in Fig. 4) whereby the hooks 24 engage the studs ll, while the trousers are held between the now arranged vertical plate members l0 and 29 and are automatically pressed owing to the pressure of these plate members against each other.

It will be seen from the aforesaid disclosure that due'to the rotative movement of the clampin plates l1 and I9 with respect to each other and relatively to the stationary upright plates [0 about the pivot pins or spindles I2 stretching of the trousers and subsequent pressure on the trousers will be brought about,

While a preferred embodimentof the invention has been shown and herein described, it will be understood that the same is capable of modification without departure from the general scope and spirit of the invention as defined in the claim.

Having thus described'the invention, What claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:

A portable garment supporting and stretching device comprising, in combination, two spacedapart upright standards having a supporting base therefonsaid' standards terminating in lower and upper ends, a recessed member connecting said upper ends with each other for bracing said standards, aligned spindles extending toward each other and mounted on said standards adjacent the lower ends thereof, spaced stationa'ry'plate members extending between and fixed to said standards, first movable clamp means extending below said stationary plate'members and between said standards andsprin'gedly supported on" said spindles for swinging movement forwardly of said placed over said second plate members and in contact with said second clamp means may first be moved to abut against said first clamp means, to'thereby facilitate stretching of the garment along said movable plate members, said garment being's'ubsequ'entl'y movable toward said stationary plate members for pressing purpose between the latter members and said movable plate members, and couplin means for releasably maintaining said movable plate members together with said second clamp means against said stationary plate members, whiie saidfirst clamp-means is substantially inalignm'ent'with said stationary plate members.
