1 Claim.

This invention relates to bottle openers of the type carried in a pocket or handbag, and in particular a bottle opener in the form'of a coin with an opening extended through the intermediate part thereof and with a blade slidably mounted in a slot therein whereby the blade is positioned within the limit of the coin in the closed position and is extended with an edge thereof positioned to grip the edge of a bottle cap with the cap inserted in the opening of the body portion of the coin, for use.

The purpose of this invention is to provide a bottle opener that has a smooth round outer surface so that it does not punch holes in pockets: or catch in articles in a handbag or the like.

Various types of bottle openers have been provided but because of the peripheral surface it is objectionable to carry the openers in a pocket or handbag and where the elements are solid the prying edge wears away rapidly. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a bottle opener of the pocket carrying type that is substantially of the same size as a large coin and that has a cap gripping blade slidably mounted in a slot therein whereby the blade is extended for use and wherein with the inner end of the blade gripping the cap of the bottle the outer end provides a handle.

The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for forming a bottle opener in the form of a coin and wherein a blade of hard steel may be incorporated therein.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improv-ed bottle opener in the form of a coin having a bottle cap receiving opening with a blade adjustably mounted therein whereby the blade may readily be set to grip tops of bottles.

A further object of the invention is to provide a coin shaped bottle opener which is of a simple and economical construction. Y

With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a circular body having an opening through the intermediate part thereof with a steel blade having an elongated slot therein slidably mounted in a slot extended through one side of the body and secured in folded and extended positions by a thumb screw.

Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings wherein:

Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating the coin shaped bottle opener with the parts in the closed positions.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the bottle opener taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a cross section through the bottle opener taken on line 3 3 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a plan View similar to that shown in Figure 1 showing the blade extended.

Figure 5 is a longitudinal section through the bottle opener taken substantially on line 2-2 of Figure 1 with the blade extended and showing a bottle with a cap thereon positioned in the opener with the cap in the position of engaging the end of the blade by which the cap is removed.

Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the coin shaped bottle opener of this invention includes a circular body Ill, a blade II, slidably mounted in the body and a thumb screw I2 extended through a slot I3 in the blade and threaded in an opening lli in the lower side of the body.

As illustrated in the drawing the body I0 is provided with an opening I5 that is formed with a short end I6, a long end I1 and sides I8 and I9 that converge from the end Il to the end I6.

A recess 20 is provided in the body at one end of the opening I 5 and at the opposite side of the opening a slot 2| extends from the end I6 to the outer peripheral surface of the body.

The blade II is slidably mounted in the slot 2I and the thumb screw I2 extends through the slot permitting the blade to be moved outwardly to the position shown in Figure 5 for use, and inwardly to the position shown in Figure 1 wherein the inner end of the blade is positioned in the recess 20. With the blade in the inner position the opposite end is within the limit or peripheral edge of the body whereby all corners or projecting parts are eliminated.

With the parts arranged in this manner the blade II moves into the closed position and is secured therein by the thumb screw I2 so that the bottle opener may be carried in the pocket or in a handbag without occupying excessive room .and without punching holes in a pocket or catching in articles in a handbag.

When it is desired to use the bottle opener the blade II is extended to the position shown in Figure 5 and the cap of the bottle is inserted through the opening as shown by the dotted lines wherein the edge of the cap is gripped by the inner end of the blade and the outer end of the blade is used as a handle.

It will be understood that modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed is:

In a bottle opener, the combination which comprises a flat circular body having a bottle cap receiving opening therethrough with a slot extending from the opening to the periphery of the body and also having a recess in the body positioned on the side of the opening opposite to that from which the slot extends, a blade having an elongated slot therein slidably mounted in the slot extending through the lbody and positioned withthe inner, end thereof in the said recess, the .length ofisaid blade being such that with one end positioned in the said recess and against the inner end thereof the opposite end is substantially within the periphery. of thebodyr of the opener and a thumb screw threaded in the 15 13129,'9'52' body and extended through the slotbof-ithef -lilexe` whereby the blade is selectively secured in retracted or extended positions.
