- J}. H. TINGMAN.
GANISTBR. No. 262,259. Patented Aug. 8, 1882.
ilNrTED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN H. TINGMAN, OF SAN FRANOISGO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO A. SOHILLING & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
CANISTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,259, dated August 8, 1882,
Application filed May 22, 188-2. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY TINGMAN, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Oanister; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to an improved containing-canister, which is principally useful for coffee, spices, and other dry substances; and it consists in certain details of construction, as hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a view of my canister, showing the opening closed. Fig. 2 is a view showing it open.
In the present case I have shown my invention as applied to a rectangular can, A, of any convenient size and shape suitable for holding tea, coffee, and other articles.
In order to introduce these articles, and also to provide a convenient spout for pouring out the contents of the can or vessel, I form an opening, B, in one corner of the top, two ofits sides corresponding with the sides of the can or vessel, while the other side may be curved, the corner or angle being the center about which the curve is formed. In order to close this opening when desired, I employ a plate, 0, of suitable size and shape to fit into the angle and close the opening entirely. This plate has a flange, D, bent down at one side, so as to extend down a short distance upon the outside of the can, being widest just at the corner or angle, where it has a hinge, E, formed, by which it is united with the vertical corner of the can, as shown. A slit is cut in one side of this plate U, on top, to form a lip, F, which is cut upjust enough to extend over the curved edge of the opening B, while the remainder of the edge of the plate passes below it.
A slot, G, is made in the vertical side of the can, just below the top, through which the curved edge of the plateB passes, and by which it is guided and held firmly in place.
The top of the can has a small flange, H, formed all around it in the manufacture, and it projects up just enough so that at the point over the slot Gr it acts as a stop against which the lip F strikes when the cover or plate 0 has been opened to its fullest extent, and thus prevents its being forced away from the can and out of its guiding-slot.
At the outer corner of the cover-plate G, and opposite to the lip F, a small lip, I, is turned up, so as to project slightly above the flange ot' the can-top when the cover is closed, and this serves to open and close the can.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a containing vessel or canister having the opening B, the closing plate or cover 0, having the flange D hinged to the corner or angle, and the guide-lip F, substantially as herein described.
' 2. In a containing vessel or canister having the opening Bin the top and the slot Gin the side beneath the top, the plate 0, hinged to the corner or angle of the vessel, and provided with the guide-lip F, projecting above the top, while the edge of the plate projects beneath the top and moves through the slot G, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN H. TIN GMAN.
