SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,770, dated July 25, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES T. SEGAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York,

have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Folding Cots; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention in a perspective view.

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the under side of the cot when folded. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail of the upright slotted strip and the braces connected to it. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are details of the side braces of the cot and the iron bearings.

This invention has relation to folding bed.- frames or cots, and refers especially to certain improvements upon the folding cot described in Letters Patent No. 257,085, granted to me on the th day of April, 1882. I

The invention consists in extending outward the lower sectional cross-bars of the head and foot supports to engage the notched ends of the pivoted side braces, which are connected to the rails and work in pivoted slide-bearings connected to the standards; also, in slotting the upright strip which connects the inner ends of the sections composing the upper and lower cross-bars, and in providing the inner ends of the upper sectional cross-bars with braces, the lower ends of which are connected by a pivot which slides in the slotof the upright strip, all as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the side rails of the cot-frame; B, the standards at the head and foot, which are pivotedto said rails and C, the sectional crossbars, which are pivoted to the standards B and centrally connected by the upright metallic strips D. The upper cross-bar is composed of the sections E, which are pivoted to each other and to the connecting-bar D at g. Each of these sections is provided with an iron brace, H, which is pivoted to said section by 50 its upper end and extends obliquely downward. The strip D is vertically slotted at k, and the oblique braces H of the sections E are connected by a sliding pivot, l, which works in the slot k of said strip. When the bed frame is folded the braces and slotted strip 5 5 govern the movements of the cross-bars, so that they move together. This construction also serves to hold the cross-bars square and true.

N represents the side braces which are piv- 6o oted to the rails at m. Each side brace is formed with a notched lower end, 1:, and slides through aslotted iron bearing, 1', which is pivoted to the standard B. The outer end of each lower cross-bar section, C, is extended, as indicated at z, and when the frame is unfolded for use this extension 2 engages the notched hearing 10 at the end of the side brace. In this manner the frame is firmly braced. in position when unfolded and set up. The cross-bar 7o braces and the side braces act in unison to steady the standards and cross-bars, so that the legs will not sway and the frame will be strong and secure.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. In a folding cot, the extensions 2 of the lower sectional cross-bars, and the pivoted side braces, N, having the notched ends 1) and piv- 8o oted slide-bearings r, substantially as specified.

2. In a folding cot, the slotted upright connection D and the oblique braces H, pivoted to the sections E of the cross-bar by their upper ends, and connected at their lower ends by the slide-pivot l engaging the slot of said upright connection.

7 3. In a folding cot, the combination, with the sectional cross-bars, standards, and rails, of 0 the slotted center strips, D, the oblique braces H, and the side braces, N, substantially as specified.
