The outer end 40 of the shut-off valve is provided with the eye M which is pivotally connected by the link 42 to the trip lever 43 which is fulcrumed on a stud 45 which projects from the casing 6. The upper end of said lever 43 is provided with the opening 46 for loose engagement with the pin 41 carried by the cam link 1 50. Said cam link 50, as is fully described in said Penn Patent Re. 19,201, is provided at its free end with a V-shaped cam portion 50' which is in engagement with a roller 5I carried by the stud 5I' on the lever 20. The inclined surface of the V-shaped portion 50 of said cam 50 is maintained in engagement with the roller 5| by means of the spring 52, the upper end of which is connected to the cam link 50 and the lower end of which encircles the stud 53 rigidly fixed in the casing 6. The purpose of such mechanism is to impart a snap action to the member 40, to open or close said valves 4 and 5 with a snap action. Such snap action mechanism is old and well known in the art and forms no part of our invention.
Referring to the form of our invention shown in Figs. 2 and 3; the air inlet port 2 is in communication with the outlet port I2 through the communicating passageway 56 controlled by the main valve 4 and safety shut-off piston valve 5. Said main valve 4 is stressed towards closed position on its valve seat 51 by means of the spring 58, one end of which is engaged in the recess 59 formed in the head 60 of the valve 4. The opposite end of said spring 58 is engaged in the recess 6| formed in the end of the screw plug 62 which is engaged in the screw threaded opening 63 formed at the left-hand side of the casing 3. Said valve 4 is provided with the intermediate reduced stem portion 65 which is of lesser diameter than the diameter of the passageway 56. Said reduced portion 65 is of such length as to assure that the reduced portion 65 will be presented across the passageway 56 regardless of whether the valve 4 be in closed posi tion as shown in Fig. 2 or in open position as shown in Fig 3. The right-hand end 61 of said valve 4 is enlarged and is in sliding engagement in the guide opening 68 formed in said casing 3.
The safety shut-off piston valve 5 is in sliding engagement in the guide opening 68 and the left-hand end of said valve 5 is adapted to engage the right-hand end 61 of the main valve 6 and to move the main valve 4 to open position, as shown in Fig. 3, when said valve 5 is moved to open position by the snap mechanism. Said valve 5 is provided with the intermediate reduced portion 10 which is of lesser diameter than the diameter of the passageway 56. Said reduced portion 10 is arranged to be presented across the passageway 56 when the valve 5 is moved to open position, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to permit communication between the passageway 56 and the outlet port I2. The right-hand end of the valve 5 and the portion 40 thereof are fitted in sliding engagement in the guide passageway 12 formed in the screw threaded extension I0 of the casing 3.
When the snap action mechanism has moved the valve 5 from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3, the left-hand end of the valve 5 has engaged the right-hand end 61 of the valve 4 andmoved the valve 4 to open position as shown in Fig. 3. When in such position, the air under high pressure can flow through the inlet port 2, around the valve 4, through the valve seat 51, around the reduced portion 65 of the valve 4 to the passageway 56, and around the reduced portion 10 of the shut-off valve 5 to the outlet port I2, and thence to the conduit I3, etc.
The form of our invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is a modification of the structure shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and the casing I03 is arranged to be mounted in the wall of the casing 6 in the same manner as heretofore described with reference to the casing 3. Referring to Figs. 4 and 5; the air inlet port I02 is in communication with the air outlet port II2 through the communicating passageway I56 controlled by the main valve I04 and safety shut-off valve I05. Said main valve I04 is stressed towards closed position on its valve seat I51 by means of the spring I58. one end of which is engaged in the recess I59 formed in the head I60 of the valve I04. The opposite end of said spring I 58 is engaged in the recess I6I formed in the end of the screw plug I62 which is engaged in the screw threaded opening I63 formed at the left-hand side of the casing I03.
Said valve I04 is provided with the intermediate reduced stem portion I65 which is of lesser diameter than the diameter of the passageway I56. Said reduced portion I65 is of such length as to assure that the reduced portion I65 will be presented across the passageway I56 regardless of whether the valve I04 be in closed position as shown in Fig. 4 or in open position as shown in Fig. 5. The right-hand end I61 of said valve I04 is enlarged and is in sliding engagement in the guide opening I68 formed in said casing I03.
The safety shut-off valve I05 is fitted in sliding engagement in the guide opening I68 and said valve I05 is provided with the guide rod I10 of reduced diameter, and the left-hand end of which is arranged to engage the recess I1I formed in the right-hand end of the valve I04 and to move the valve I04 to open position as shown in Fig. 5. The left-hand end of the guide rod I10 is slidably mounted in the guide washer I12 which is mounted rigidly in the opening I68 by means of the pin I 13. The spring I15 encircles the guide rod I10, and the left-hand end of said spring I15 is in engagement with the guide washer I12. The right-hand end of said spring I15 is in engagement with the shoulder I16 formed on the valve I05.
The right-hand end of the casing I53 is provided with the screw threaded extension IIO, similar to the extension I0 of the casing 3. The extension H0 is provided with the opening I18 for the packing I80, packing gland nut I8I, and the stop guide member I82 for the push rod I40 which is of lesser diameter than the diameter of the passageway I56. A reduced diameter push rod and a stuffing box are used to limit the friction, and also to minimize the unbalanced air pressure which might occur when a push rod of larger diameter is used. The left-hand end of the push rod I40 is engaged in the socket I83 formed in the right-hand end of the shut-off valve I05. The right-hand end of the push rod I40 is provided with the eye I4I which is adapted to be pivotally connected to the link 42 in the same manner as has been heretofore described with reference to the eye 4| of the form of our invention shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

When the main valve I84. and thesafety shut-off valve I05 are in the open position as shown. in Fig: 5,. the air under high pressure can; flow through the inlet port I62, around thevalve IM, through the valve seat I51, around the. reduced. portion, H35 of the valve I04. to the. passageway I56, and around the push rod Illto the, outlet port H2, and thence to the conduit I13. etc. As shown in Fig. 5, when the valve, N35 is in open position it has been moved from its, closing position across the passageway I56, and the push rod. MI]; of lesser diameter is presented across the air passageway E55, so as to permit communication between the passageway I56. and the outlet port I I2.
The left-hand end of, thevalve I05.is. provided with the opening I90 which affords open communication between the socket I83 formed in the valve IE5 and the guide passageway I68. The opening lei] permits air to flow from. the; right end to the left end, and vice versa, as the valve is being operated. It is; to be noted that there should be an adequate; amount of clearance around the push rod and through the opening to prevent entrappingof air, which would occur particularly as the valve Hi5 moves towards the right in Fig. 4 until arrested by the stop guide member M32.
The form of our invention. shown in Figs. 6 and 7 is a modification of the structure shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and the casing 263: is arranged to be mounted in the wall of the-casing: 6 in the same manner as heretofore described withreference to the casing 3. In the structure shown in Figs. 6 and 7 a stufiing box and smaller push rod are used so as to limit the friction, and also to minimize the unbalanced air pressure which might occur on a push rod of large diameter. Referring toFigs. G and 7, the air inlet port 292 is in communication with the air outlet port 2I2 through t1 e communicating passageway. 256 controlled by the main valve 204 and the safety shut-off valve 295. Said main valve, 204 is stressed towards closed position on its valve seat 251 by means of the spring 258, one end of which is engaged in the recess 259 formedin the head 26% of the valve 2M. The opposite end of said spring 25% is engaged in the recessZGI formed in the end of the screw plug 262 which is engaged in the screw threaded opening 263 formed at the left-hand side of the casing 203. Saidvalve 204 is provided with the intermediate reduced'stem portion 235 which is of lesser diameter than the diameter of the passageway 256. Said reduced portion 285 is of such length as to assure that the reduced portion 28.5.wil1 be presented across the passageway 256,. regardless of: whether the valve 28 3- be in closed position asshown in Fig.- 6

Operation Theform' of our tire inflating apparatus. shown in Figs. 1 ,.2 and.3 operate as follows:
Assuming that ity is desired to inflate an automobile. tire to a pressure of 30 pounds per square inch, the operator turns the crank 36 to move the indicating hand to the numeral 30'appearin on the dial face. The-operator then presses the airchuck I8: upon the stemof the automobile tire whichv opensthetire valve and likewise moves the valvein the air chuck to openposition against the air pressure in the hose II-. The, operation ofsuch snap action. linkage construction is old in the art and disclosed in detail in Penn Patent Re. 19 20.1.

Said 7.5 do betweenthe passageway 56 and. the outlet port l2. Such movement of the safety shut-off valve from the closed position shown in Fig. 2 to the open position shown in Fig. 3 causes the left-hand end of the valve 5 to engage the righthand end of the main valve 4 and moves the main valve 4 from closed position to open position.
With the main inflating valve 4 thus open, air under pressure from the source flows through the air inlet port 2, around the valve 4, through the valve seat 51, around the reduced portion 65 of the valve 4 to the passageway 56, around the reduced portion of the shut-off valve 5 to the outlet port [2, through the conduit l3 to the T- fitting I5, conduit l6, dispensing hose [1, opened air chuck l8 and thence to the automobile tire through the open valve thereof. A restricted amount of high pressure air is admitted to the chamber in the casing through the timer valve in the branch l5 of the T-fitting [5. Because the air under high pressure is admitted slowly to the chamber beneath the diaphragm 26 through the timer valve, approximately one or two pounds of air is supplied to the tire before the pressure in the diaphragm chamber becomes great enough to cause the diaphragm to move the stud 25 upwardly to cause the lever 20 to move clockwise against the effective forces of the spring 32. Movement of the lever 20 clockwise causes the snap action mechanism to move the shut-off valve 5 from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 2 and wherein the shutoff valve 5 closes the passageway 56 and prevents further flow of air through the air outlet l2 to the tire. Movement of the shut-off valve 5 from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 2, permits the main valve 4 to be snapped to closed position by the effective forces of its spring 58.
If the main valve 4 should fail to seat for any reason, such as a particle of foreign matter on the valve 4 or the valve seat 51, or because of the breaking of the spring 58, air could not continue to flow through the mechanism from the supply tank because the safety shut-off valve 5, connected directly to the snap mechanism, has been moved positively to closed position across the air passageway 56, thereby preventing any further flow of air.
The forms of our invention shown in Figs. 4 to '7 inclusive function in the same general manner.
Although we have described our invention in connection with fluid dispensing apparatus wherein the main inflating valve is pushed from its seat to open said valve, it is obvious that our invention also is adaptable to fluid dispensing apparatus wherein the main inflating valve is pulled oif its seat. Accordingly, it is obvious that various modifications may be made in our invention without departing from the essential-features thereof as defined in the appended claims and, therefore, we do not desire to limit ourselves to the precise details of construction and arrangement hereinabove set forth.
We claim: 1. In fluid dispensing apparatus for filling a 8 connected to said pressure regulating mechanism; a safety shut-off valve between said inlet conduit and said outlet conduit and arranged to operate said main inflating valve; and means operatively connecting said safety shut-off valve directly with said snap action mechanism.
2. In fluid dispensing apparatus for filling a receiver with air in pulsations to a predetermined pressure; the combination of an inlet conduit adapted for connection with a source of supply of air under pressure; an outlet conduit adapted for connection with a receiver; conduit means connecting said inlet and outlet conduits; pressure regulating mechanism; a main inflating valve between said inlet conduit and said outlet conduit; a snap action mechanism operatively connected to said pressure regulating mechanism; a safety shut-off valve between said inlet conduit and said outlet conduit and arranged to operate said main inflating valve; and means connecting said safety shut-off valve directly to said snap action mechanism to actuate said safety shut-off valve positively by said snap action mechanism.
3. In fluid dispensing apparatus for filling a receiver with air in pulsations to a predetermined pressure; the combination of an inlet conduit adapted for connection with a source of supply of air under pressure; and outlet conduit adapted for connection with a receiver; conduit means connecting said inlet and outlet conduits; pressure regulating mechanism; a main inflating valve between said inlet conduit and said outlet conduit; a snap action mechanism operatively connected to said pressure regulating mechanism; a safety shut-off valve between said main infiating valve and said outlet conduit and arranged to operate said main inflating valve; and means operatively connecting said safety shut-off valve directly to said snap action mechanism.
4. In fluid dispensing apparatus for filling a receiver with air in pulsations to a predetermined pressure; the combination of an inlet conduit adapted for connection with a source of supply of air under pressure; an outlet conduit adapted for connection with a receiver; conduit means connecting said inlet and outlet conduits; pressure regulating mechanism; a main inflating valve between said inlet conduit and said outlet conduit; a snap action mechanism operatively connected to said pressure regulating mechanism; a safety shut-off valve between said inlet conduit and said outlet conduit and arranged to operate said main inflating valve; means tending to move said safety shut-off valve towards closed position; and means operatively connecting said safety shut-off valve directly to said snap action mechanism.
5. In fluid dispensing apparatus for filling a receiver with air in pulsations to a predetermined pressure; the combination of an inlet conduit adapted for connection with a source of supply of air under pressure; an outlet conduit adapted for connection with a receiver; conduit means connecting said inlet and outlet conduits; pressure regulating mechanism; a main inflating valve between said inlet conduit and said outlet conduit; a snap action mechanism operatively connected to said pressure regulating mechanism; a safety shut-off valve between said inlet conduit and said outlet conduit and arranged to operate said main inflating valve; spring means tending to move said safety shut-01f valve toward closed position; and means operatively connecting said safety shut-01f valve directly to said snap action mechanism.
6. In fluid dispensing apparatus for filling a receiver with air in pulsations to a predetermined pressure; the combination of an inlet conduit adapted for connection with a source of supply of air under pressure; an outlet conduit adapted for connection with a receiver; conduit means connecting said inlet and outlet conduits; pressure regulating mechanism; a main inflating valve between said inlet conduit and said outlet conduit; a snap action mechanism operatively connected to said pressure regulating mechanism; a safety shut-off valve between said inlet conduit and said outlet conduit; means operatively connecting said safety shut-off valve directly to said snap action mechanism; and means connected to said safety shut-off valve and arranged to operate said main inflating valve.
7. A structure as in claim 1; wherein the safety shut-01f valve is provided with a reduced diameter portion of lesser diameter than the diameter of the safety shut-off valve; whereby said reduced diameter portion is presented across said conduit means connecting said inlet and outlet conduits when said safety shut-ofi valve is moved to open position by said snap action mechanism.
8. A structure as in claim 1; wherein the safety shut-off valve is provided with a push rod of lesser diameter than the diameter of the safety shut-off valve; whereby said push rod is presented across said conduit means connecting said inlet and outlet conduits when said safety shutoff valve is moved to open position by said snap action mechanism.
9. In fluid dispensing apparatus for filling a receiver with air in pulsations to a predetermined pressure; the combination of an inlet conduit adapted for connection with a source of supply of air under pressure; an outlet conduit adapted for connection with a receiver; conduit means connecting said inlet and outlet conduits; pressure regulating mechanism; a main inflating valve between said inlet conduit and said outlet conduit; means operatively connected to said pressure regulating mechanism to cause quick opening or closing of the said main valve; and a safety shut-off valve, connected directly to said means for causing quick opening or closing of said main valve, between said inlet and said outlet conduits; whereby, said last mentioned means is in controlling relation to said main valve and said safety shut-01f valve.
10. In fluid dispensing apparatus for filling a receiver with air in pulsations to a predetermined pressure; the combination of an inlet conduit adapted for connection with a source of supply of air under pressure; an outlet conduit adapted for connection with a receiver; conduit means connecting said inlet and outlet conduits; pressure regulating mechanism; a main inflating valve between said inlet conduit and said outlet conduit; a snap action mechanism operatively connected to said pressure regulating mechanism; a safety shut-01f valve between said inlet conduit and said outlet conduit and connected directly to said snap action mechanism; and means operatively connecting said main valve and said safety shut-01f valve with said snap action mechanism.
11. In fluid dispensing apparatus for filling a receiver with air in pulsations to a predetermined pressure; the combination of an inlet conduit adapted for connection with a source of supply of air under pressure; an outlet conduit adapted for connection with a receiver; conduit means connecting said inlet and outlet conduits; pressure regulating mechanism; a main inflating valve between said inlet conduit and said outlet conduit; a snap action mechanism operatively connected to said pressure regulating mechanism; a safety shut-oil valve between said inlet conduit and said outlet conduit and connected directly to said snap action mechanism; and means adapted to operate said main valve by said safety shut-01f valve connected with said snap action mechanism movement.
