POULTRY DRINKING FOUNTAIN Filed Feb. 25. 195o INVENToR. CZ/SE/VCE //O/eu fr/V Patented Nov. 4, 1952 UNITED STATES RATENT OFFICE POULTRY DRINKING FOUNTAIN Clarence Norland, Cypress, Calif.
Application February 23, 1950, Serial No. 145,790
1 Claim. l
My invention relates to drinking fountains particularly designed for poultry use and the principal objects of my invention are, to generally improve upon and simplify the construction of the existing forms of poultry fountains, particularly those wherein the relling action is automatic, to provide the fountain with a readily adjustable valve for controlling the flow of water into the cup or bowl and, further, to provide simple means for mounting the cup or bowl so that same may be readily manipulated without disassembly while being cleaned.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, herein more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a front elevational view of a poultry drinking fountain constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the adjustable valve used in my improved fountain.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention, i8 designates a Water supply duct, to which is detachably secured a valve body il, having a duct I2, and formed in the intermediate portion of said duct is an annular valve seat I3.
A housing composed of side walls I4, bottom plate I and rear wall I partially encloses the lower portion of Valve body II and is pivotally connected to the lower front portion of said body, by the lower leg Il, of a substantially hairpin-shaped wire member which includes an upper leg IB and a coil I9 connecting said legs at one end.
Lower leg Vi of this wire member passes through the the lower front corner of body II and through the adjacent portions of side Walls Iii.
Under normal conditions leg Iii occupies notches 2D in the upper front edges of side walls lll, thus providing a stop to limit the upwardswinging movement of the water bowl connected to walls l@ and bottom plate l5, and when said leg Iii is swung downward and engaged in notches 2i formed in the lower front edges of side walls I4, the water cup or bowl may be swung upward into a substantially vertical position to facilitate emptying and cleaning.
Connected to the front edges of side walls It and front edge of bottom plate i5 is the rear portion of the water containing cup or bowl 22 and in order to permit limited downward swinging movement of this water cup, the face of valve body II immediately in front of rear wall I is cut away to provide a clearance notch 23. Depending from the rear portion of bottom plate I5 is a short arm 24, to which is adjustably connected by a clamping screw 25, a weight 25a for counterbalancing cup 22 and its contents.
Seated in bottom plate I5 is a screw 26, in the upper end of which is seated a plug 2l, of rubber or the like, and which functions as a valve to engage on seat I3 and thereby control the flow of water through duct I2 into cup 22.
Under normal conditions, or with cup 22 i'llled with water, valve 2l is held against its seat, thus cutting olf the flow of water to the cup and as the water is withdrawn from said cup by the drinking poultry, counterbalancing weight 22 will act to swing cup upward on its axis, leg il, thus withdrawing valve 21 from its seat to permit water to flow through duct I2 into the cup and thereby rell same.
The weight of the water thus admitted to cup 22 acts to swing same downward to its normal position and restore valve 21 to its seat, thus automatically cutting off further ilow of water through the valve.
Obviously, my improved fountain, with minor structural changes, may have the valve body horizontally disposed, for connection to a horizontal water supply pipe.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a poultry drinking fountain which is simple in structure, capable of being easily and quickly adjusted, wholly automatic in operation, easily cleaned and very effective in performing the functions for which it is intended.
Minor changes in the size, form, and construction of the various parts of my improved poultry drinking fountain may be made and substituted for those herein shown without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
In a poultry drinking fountain, a valve body provided with a duct and a valve seat formed therein, a housing partially enclosing the discharge end of said valve body, a water cup carried by said housing, a member having a part for pivotally connecting said housing to said valve body, said member also having a part for limiting the swinging movement of said housing and cup, an adjustable valve carried by said housing for engaging the seat in said duct and.
