Description

C. O. KIRCHNER Oct. 21, 1952 coILING MACHINE v Filed Des.` 5. 1949 2 SHEETS-SHEET l will" IN VEN TOR. laff/ O. /f/)Y/ff w? /a/wey I C. O. KIRCHNER COILING MACHINE Oct. 21, 1952 2 SHEETS-SHEET 2 Filed Dec. 5, 1949 INVENTOR. v (gw/0. K/)ff// AIV/orbe?.
While I desirably employ the series of four tools illustrated, a lesser number of the end thrust series may be used being angularly positioned relative to the work in proper relation to the guide tube so that it delivers the stock in impinging relation to the rst tool without such openspace to permit outward buckling of tne stock between theguide tube and the rst tool. In starting the machine the stock is advanced through the guide tube and ordinarily by means of a hand tool is guided into proper relation or engagement with the iirst former tool. The former tools being properlyadjusted either before or after making a test coil the machine is entirely automatic until it is necessary to start a new bail of stock or to readjust the machine for wear or variation in the diameter -rand pitch of the coil desired.
I have illustrated and described my invention in a highly desirable embodiment thereof. I` have not attemptedto illustrate or describe certain embodiments or adaptations Which'I contemplate as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt .my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a spring ceiling machine, the combination with a support, of a plurality of forming tools provided with grooved end faces and disposed in generally radial angularly spaced relation to the work, said support being provided with j individual holders for saidv tools, each holder including a rest tiltably supporting the tool `intermediate its ends, adjusting screws engaging the tool on opposite sides of the rest for tiltably adjusting the tool axially of the work and clamping'it in its adjusted position, an adjustable end thrust abutment for the outer end of the tool, a tubular guide disposed withv its inner end closely adjacent the first tool of the series and positioned to guide the stock into the groove and z against the face of such tool.
2. In a spring ceiling machine, the combination with a head member, of a forming tool provided with a grooved end face and disposed ina generally radial relation to the work, said head `member being provided with a holder for said`v` it in its adjusted position, an adjustable end thrust abutment for the outer end of the tool.
3. In a spring coiling machine, the combination with a head member, a tool disposed in generally tangential relation to the Work and having aA laterally and inwardly facing groovedV face i at its inner end, va holder for such tool 'comprising a recess in said head member of such dimensions as to permittilting adjustment of the tool radially and axially of the work, a removable top plate for said recess, a rest atthe bottom of the recess for tiltably supporting the tool for adjustment axially of the Work, screws carried by said top plate and engaging the tool on opposite sides of said rest for axially Vadjusttiltably supporting said tool for4 adjustment fing and clamping the tool in adjusted axial position, a restat the inner side of said recess-for 4 radially of the Work. and screws disposed through the outer wall of the recess engaging the tool on opposite sides of said rest for radially adjusting and clamping said tool in its adjusted position.
4. In a spring coiling machine, the combination with a support, off a plurality of forming :tools disposed-,fin generally radiall angularly spaced relation to the Work andk provided with grooved end faces, means onsaid support for and pitch, said last named means including a recess in said holder for receiving said bar-like tool, a rest at the bottom of said recess for tiltably supporting the bar-like vtool between its ends, and adjustablemeans on saidholder for engaging the'bar-like tool for tiltably adjusting the same on said rest in a direction axially of the work and for clamping it in adjusted position.
5. In a spring coiling machine, the combina- Ytion with a support, of a radially disposed tool provided with a grooved end face, a holder for said tool provided with means for adjusting the tool radially and supporting it in its adjusted position and for adjusting it axially and supporting it in its adjusted position, a bar-like tool disposed in succeeding relationto the aforesaid tool and in generally tangential relation to the work and having a laterally and inwardly facing grooved face,A said grooved face extending generally lengthwise the tool, means for ad- Vjustably supporting said tool axially of the work,
and further-means for adjustably supporting said tool radially of the work, said means for adjusting the bar-like tool axially of the work including a holder having a recess therein for receiving said bar-like tool, a rest at the bottom of the recess for tiltably supporting said bar-like tool in said recess, and adjusting means on said holder for engaging said bar-like tool and tilting the same `on said rest in a direction axially of the workand for clamping it in adjusted position.
6. In a spring ceiling machine, the combination with a support, of a bar-like tool disposed in generally tangentialrelation to the Work and having a laterally and'inwardly facing rgrooved face, said grooved face extending generally lengthwise the tool, means for adjustably supporting said tool axially of the work, and further means for adjustably supporting said tool radially of the`w`ork, said'me'ans vforfadjusting the bar-like tool axially of the Work including a holder having a recess therein for receiving said bar-like tool, av rest at the bottom oi the recess for tiltably Supporting said bar-like tool in said recess,'and adjusting means on said holder for engaging said bar-like tool and tilting the-'same on said rest in a direction axiallyof the work and for clamping it in adjusted position.
head member being provided with a, holder for said tool comprising a groove-like recess of a width to receive and provide a support for the tool. a rest at the bottom of the recess tiltably supporting the tool intermediate its ends, a removable top plate opposite from said rest for retaining said tool in said recess, and adjusting screws carried by said top plate and engaging the tool on the opposite sides of the rest for tiltably adjusting the tool axially of the work and clamping it in adjusted position.
