(ModeL) I J. G. F. DICK.
BUTTON FASTENER. 110.261.317. Patented July 18, 1882.
WITNESSES V ATTQRNEYS.
hognphqr. Wanhingtnm no I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH O. F. DICK, OF BELVIDERE, ILLINOIS.
BUTTON-FASTENER.
srnornrca'rroiv forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,317, dated July 18, 1882. Application filed March 24, 1882. ()IcdcL) provement in Button-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to fasteners used for securing buttons upon shoes, and has the ob- I0 jeet to facilitate the work of placing and fasta tongue, which, being bent upon the button-,
ening the buttons and staples.
- It consists in a staple orfastener formed with shank, prevents separation of the button and fastener, as hereinafter described andclaimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved fastener as applied to a button. Fig. 2 is a sectional side view of the same, and Fig. 3 is an inverted plan View of the fastener and button.
A is the fastener, made in staple form with points a a for entering the leather, and with a groove, b, to receive the button eye or shank, as usual; but this staple may be made in any suitable form.
c is a tongue formed bycuttingout the metal of the staple between two of the said prongs, and of such length that when bent inward beneath the staple it covers the groove 12 and holds the eye of the button in the said groove, as shown. The staple is to be passed through the eye or shank of the button, and the tongue 0 then bent down against the eye. The button and fastener are thus connected together, and the button cannot slip on the'fastener during its manipulation in securing it to the shoe. The work is thus facilitated, whether done by a hand-instrument or a machine.
The fastener may be put up for. salewith the buttons at tached or sold separately, as desired.
Having thus described my invention,Iclain1 as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The button-fastener A, consisting of a base-plate provided with end depending pene- 'trating'points, a, one. of which is bent to form a groove or loop to receive the button-eye and a tongue, 0, turned beneath the'base-plate and closing the bottom of the groove or loop, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 2. An improved button-fastener, consisting of a base-plate provided with the end penetrating-points, a, one of which is bent to form a receivingloop or groove, b, and a depending tongue, 0, adapted to be folded beneath the plate and close the bottom of the loop or groove, substantially as set forth.
