M ma,
Patented Oct. 7, 1952 This invention relates to upholstered armchairs, and particularly to childrens rocking chairs which are upholstered andprovided with arms.
, An important object of the invention is to provide a simple and durable chair of the above kind which may be cheaply and expeditiously manufactured, and which includes seat,'back, and side or arm members which may be separately upholstered and then readily assembled orfastened I together with the tacks which secure the upholstery in position concealed from view.
Another object is to provide the chair with rockers of novel form which prevent ready backiward overturning of the chair, and which are rigidly secured to the frames of the side or arm members and braced laterally and longitudinally relative to the latter.
Further objects and features of the invention will be apparent from thefollowing description when considered with the accompanying draw ings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair constructed in accordance with the presentinven- Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical section taken ontheline22 ofFigurel;
Figure 3 is a verticaltransverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a vertical section, partly broken away, taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view, partly in, elevation and partly in section,; taken on the line 55 of Figure 3; V p
Figure 6 is a fragmentary horizontal section taken on the plane of line 6-6 of Figure 2; and.
Figure 7 is an exploded view of the frames of the seat, back and side members.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 indicates the seat member, 6 the back member,1l,-1 the side or arm members, andr8,"8 the rackets of the chair.
The seat member includes a rectangular boxtype frame 9 and a bottom composed of arched springs H) of the zig-zag type having their ends engaged in brackets l l secured to the upper edges of the front and rear members of frame 9, and an upholstery covering l2 whose fabric [3 is tacked at its edges to the outside of frame 9 near the top of the latter, as at I4. The front member of frame 8 is upholstered as at Ma.
The side or arm members are alike, and each includes a frame l5 having spaced vertical inner and outer bottom boards l6 and I1, and an upholstery covering l8 for the top and the inner 5 edges tacked to theouter surfaces of the side UNITED sT r srENr ormcE and outer sides of said frame, the fabric: 19 of covering I8 being tacked atits edges to the outer surfaces of the front and rear members of frame l5, tothe outer surface of boardl6, and to the bottom edge of board lLi as shown. The side or arm membersare fixed to thesides of the seat member by means of bolts 20 which pass through the side members of the frame 9 and the inner bottom boards iii of frames l5.
Theback member includes a box-type frame 2| having forwardly converging top and bottom board members 22 and 23, and an upholstery covering 24 for the top, front and rear of said frame, the fabric 25 of covering 24 having its side members of frame 2| and one end edge tacked come under side of the bottom frame member '23; The rear section of the fabric 25 covers the rear face of the rear covering 24 and the rear face of frames and has its end edge tacked to the bottom edge of said frame 9, as shown in Figure 2. Finishing strips 26, 26 and 21, 21 are secured on the front members of frames I5 and the side membersof frame 2|, respectively, by means of upholstery nails 28-having ornamental headsysa'id finishing strips covering the adjacent tacked edges of the upholstery fabrics I9 and25.
. The rockers 8 are secured by countersunk screws 29 ,to the bottom edges of the outer bottom board members i! of the frame of side or arm members 1. These rockers have rear shoulders 30 at the top which abut the lower rear edge portions of the frames I5 of the side mem bers to take rearward thrusts on said rockers. Spacer blocks3l are'glued between the ends of the bottom board members It and l! of the frames l5 and extend below said board members wherethey contact the inner sides of and are attached byscrews-32 to the rockers to laterally brace the latter. Eachrocker B has the major front portion of its bottom edge formed on an are represented by the dotted line a in Figure 5, and the minor rear portion of such bottom edge is extended at b tangentially of and below such arc so as to flatly contact the fioor when the chair is rocked rearwardly and thereby prevent ready backward overturning of the chair.
A harness is provided to safely hold a young child in the chair, such harness including a strap 33 adapted to be passed across the front of the childs waistline and having its ends detachably secured by snap fasteners 34 to the back: edges of the side members of frame 2|, and a strap 35 secured at one end to the intermediate portion of strap 33 and extending downwardly from the latter, the other end of strap 35 being adjustably and detachably secured to the lower edge of the front member of the frame 9 of the seat member by means of a separable fastener member 536 carried by said front member of frame 9 and coacting fastener members 31 carried by strap 35 and selectively engageable with the fastener member 36. The bottoms of the frames l5 and 9 may be covered by a sheet of fabric 38 tacked to the lower edges of the front and rear members of frame 9 and the lower edges of the bottom board members I! of frames ii.
In assembling the parts of the chair, the upholstered side or arm members I are bolted at 20 to the upholstered seat member 5. The back member 6 is then placed on the rear of the seat sides to the rear members of frames 9 and as at 39 and 49 (Figure 4). The rear portion of upholstery 24 is then tacked in place, and finishing strips 28 and 21 are applied. Rockers 8 are then attached, whereupon the fabric 38 is secured in place.
It will be seen that the construction is simple, durable and efficient, and that the frames may be readily constructed'separately and secured together after being upholstered so that the tacks which secure the upholstery fabric in place will be concealed from view. Modifications and changes in details are contemplated within the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what claimed as new is:
