Description

S. STARR HANDBAG Oct. 7, 1952 Filed Sept. 22, 1949 NVENTOR. SM/05L fr-ARA BY Paul ATM Arroezvsy Patented Oct. 7, 1952 detachable hinged frame and particularlyjtoflthe beading along the upper edge of the bag" and the'cooperating grooves'in the frameiritoiwhiclfi thebeaded edge of ,thebag' is easily inserted or removed;
Among the purposes and objects are to provide a hinged frame having a continuous groove and slit open at the'ends to receivethe beaded upper edge of the bag opening. 1
Another object is to .providefa frame for detachably securing the bag ,so that the beaded edge ef the bagopening may be fed into the grooves and slit 'ofthe two parts ofthe name at-or'near the hinge I which connects ,the. "swingable parts ofthe frame. f l, f 'Another object i's'to provid beaded. arginal edge for the opening in thelbag which-will permit the marginal edge to"'be gathered or pleated when assembled in placein the hand bag e' 2-! An object is to provide a frame for hand bags having hinges at each side of the bag and a slit and enlarged groove for the beaded edge of the bag; the groove and slit being open at the hinge to receive and detachably secure the bag to the frame which is curved substantially from on hinge to the other. i
I accomplish these and other objects by the construction herein described and shown in the drawing in which similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of my hand bag- Fig. 2 is an end elevation.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail showing how the beaded hem or marginal top edge of the bag portion is fed into one of the grooves and slit of one of the frame parts.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail taken at right angles from Fig. 3.
Fig.5 is a sectional detail taken at 5-5, Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of one of the frame parts and one of the tubular hems and the parts of the bag portion secured thereto.
My hand bag and frame is particularly suited to hand bags having a bag portion of pliable material such as fabric, leather or material which may be easily gathered to conform to the frame and to permit the marginal edge of the opening, which is detachably secured to the frame, to be formed into a substantially tubular hem into which the beading is concealed, and which is ES PA ENT FF E:
*asiaszsl nimate r :Starr,Brooklyn,N.Y. v l iApplication September 22,1949; seriamariioee 1, (01.15049);
ftMy invention reiatstoflahahd bag preferably provided witha plurality of beads held apart in spaced relationshipso that themarginal hem may be .cor n pressed,. gathered, 0r pleatedto facilitate feeding the beaded edge of the-bag into the open end of the groove andlslit vandalso to.

I have not lattemptedj.herein tdshowgall to limit the scope of my invention which is set forth in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar characters refer to similar parts, the hand bag has a frame I and the bag portion I which is shown as having an outer cover 2, a filler 3 and a lining 4, the cover 2 and lining 4 are turned over and inward to receive the tubular beaded hem 5 in which the beads 6 are spaced apart and strung on the string 1 which is knotted at 8 to hold the beads apart.
The edges 9 and In of the tubular hem 5 are spaced apart to receive the filler 3 and all are secured together by the rows of stitching I I.
The material of the hem 5 is a double thickness only at the neck l2 above the filler and turned-over cover and lining to slidably engage the edges l3 and M at each side of the slit [5 which is substantially narrower than the enlarged inner groove II; which is of a sufficient diameter internally to permit the beads within the tubular hem and the hem to freely slide within and throughout the length of the groove and slot in the parts I! and I8 of the frame portion 1.
I have shown the parts of the frame I as hinged to each other by the hinges l9 and 20, at each side of the bag. The hinge [9, at one side, is dissuccessive heads into the groove until the first beads arrive at each side of the centerline at the opposite side or end of the grooves and slits and all of the heads have entered their respective grooves IS.
The space 33 between the beads is sufficient to permit the tubular hem and adjacent parts secured to it along the top periphery of the bag portion, to be gathered, compressed or otherwise made to conform to theportion 34 disposed between the ends of the frame at each side of the bag. "The frame parts 1-8 and I1, and their intermediate :parts 34 are preferably curved so that the' -beadsmay be easily fed from one end to -the other thus to secure the beaded tubular=hem and the upper periphery of thebag, its opening, to the frame parts. The bag may beeasily removed by reversing the above-described feeding process; by
withdrawing the beads successivelyout of the open :ends of the jgrooves.
It will be apparent that many advantages may be'ac'comp'lishedby 'easy' 'removal of ithe bag portion from the frame portion; such as, =wornout bags may be discarded without the loss-of an ele- :ga-nt, expensive frame, the bag may be cleaned or laundered. Bags of various shapes and colors may be secured to'the same frame thus to change Having thus described a preferred embodiment of my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is set forth in the following claim.
I claim:
A bag for a pair of hinged frames each curved a substantial part of its length and having a'slit and enlarged groove for receiving the open top of the .bag, the slits and grooves .-in both frames :ofsaidpair of frames being open at iboth ends and spaced apart as between the open ends of the grooves and slits in one frame and the open ends of the grooves and slits in the other frame,
said bag comprising a tubular hem and a single of beads may be fed into said open ends .atione end of said frames simultaneously and the remaining beads in said'strin'g of beads'is divided into equal numbers as the beads are fed progres sively into said 'open ends.
