My invention relates to tractor-drawn combines.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide an improved swingable drawbar and grain bin construction for combines in which the drawbar can be swung laterally so as to provide a proper draft angle and in which the drawbar will aid in supporting the bin. 1
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the description and claims.
In the drawings, in which an embodiment of my invention is shown,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a combine embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View of a detail taken along line 3'3 of Fig. 2 showing the hinge connection between the drawbar and the chassis.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the combine shown comprises a chassis l having the two supporting wheels 2, a'grain harvesting apparatus 3 mounted on the forward right-hand portion of the chassis, a threshing apparatus 4 mounted centrally of the chassis, a grain bin 5 extending above and to the left of the casing M for the threshing apparatus, and a drawbar 7 secured to the left of the combine and in front of the grain bin 5.
The grain bin may be mounted on a rectangular framework 8 extending upwardly from'the chassis. This framework may comprise a plurality of upright angle irons 9 (only two being shown), secured at their lower ends to the chassis and at their upper ends to the grain bin supporting angle irons H3. As shown in Fig, 2, four of these'uprights 9 may be secured to the sides of the casing 24 of the threshing apparatus. The upright angle iron posts 9 may be-secured together and supported by means of horizontal angle iron braces II, the angle irons extending between the posts and being secured thereto.
The drawbar shown comprises a quadrilateral latticed tapering structural steel truss or beam secured at its rear end to the bin supporting angle iron braces H and having a clevis H2 at its front end by means of which it may be secured to the tractor.
In order to provide for the swinging adjustment of the tongue or'drawbar I, use i made of the construction shown in Fig. 3. As here shown, the right-hand upper and lower corner struts l6 of the drawbar are pivotally connected, respectively, to the horizontal steel frame members H by means of binge pins or bolts it extending through struts I 8 and through the-wear lates 15" 7 Claims. (01. 56 122) secured to the struts and through the structural frame members. The upper and lowervouter or left-hand cornerpieces or struts 16 of the drawbar are secured to the framemembers ll in a manner s'imilar'to that described in connection with the inside right-hand struts 16. In order to provide for an adjustment ofthe angular positionof the drawbar with respect to the chassis, either the inner pair of struts or theouter pair of struts are each provided with two openings I! in either one of which the bolts, may be inserted.
This enables the tongue or drawbar to -beheld either in the full-line position shown in Fig. 2, which would be the position .for transport, or
in the dotted-line position shown-in Fig. 2, which I would be the'position for use in the field, enabling the tractor to stay clear of the standing grain in drawing the combine in the proper course for harvesting thegrain.
It will be noted that the grain bin 5 is located at some height from the ground. It may perhaps be six feet from the ground to the bottom -of the grain bin. The ground over which the combine isdrawn may be somewhat rough. This will result in considerable jolting of the combine. This jolting causes the grain bin to-rock back and. forth and sideways. This subjects the machine to swaying and affects the position of the.cutterbar.
In order to minimize the bad eifects of this jarring, .I provide a strut or brace l8 betweenthe front end of the drawbar and the upper end. of the bin support having its upper rear endhinged at I9 to the angle irons 9 and Ill so that it can swing with the drawbar 1 when the drawbar is adjusted from one position to the other. As there is not much play to'the clevis l2 whichoonnects with thetractor, the grain bin f 5 will be held fairly steady, thus minimizing the jolting action.

apparatus substantially to scale and that the grain bin is about six feet long, three and onehalf feet wide and three feet deep, and with its upper portion about nine feet from the ground. It will be seen that this bin, when filled with grain, will have considerable moment of inertia. The drawbar I is shown about nine feet long with a lateral adjustment of the clevis l2 of about three and one-half feet.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is desired, therefore, that the invention be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my inventon, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A combine comprising a wheeled chassis, threshing apparatus mounted thereon comprising a casing extending longitudinally of the tractor travel, and threshing apparatus in general mounted in said casing, said threshing apparatus having swath-cutting and conveying apparatus extending transversely with respect to the thresher and laterally therebeyond, a grain bin for receiving the grain from the threshing apparatus mounted aboveand extending across said casing, and a framework for supporting said grain bin and casing'from said chassis comprising upright members extending upwardly from said chassis and embracing and secured to the sides of saidcasing and secured to said bin.
2. A combine comprising a wheeled chassis, threshing apparatus mounted thereon comprising acasing extending longitudinally of the tractor travel, and threshing apparatus in general mounted in said casing, said threshing apparatus having swath-cutting and conveying apparatus extending transversely with respect to the thresher and laterally therebeyond, a grain bin for receiving the grain from the threshing apparatus mounted above and extending across 'said'casing, and a framework for supporting said grain bin and casing from said chassis comprising four upright members extending upwardly from said chassis, two on each side of said casing and secured thereto, the upper ends of said upright members being secured to said bin.
3. A combine comprising a wheeled chassis,
threshing apparatus mounted thereon comprising a casing extending longitudinally of the tractor travel, and threshing apparatus in general mounted in said casing, said threshing apparatus having swath-cutting and conveying apparatus extending transversely with respect to the thresher and laterally therebeyond, a drawbar supporting framework comprising two upright members extending upwardly from said chassis and embracing and secured to opposite sides of said casing, and two horizontal transverselyextending frame members spaced apart and located one above the other and secured to said upright members and extending laterally beyond said casing on the stubbleward side thereof, and a drawbar secured to said lateral extensions comprising at least three corner struts extending longitudinally of the drawbar and secured together at their front ends, the rear ends of two of said corner struts being located one above the other and pivotally secured to said horizontal transversely-extending frame members, respectively, and means for securing the other of said corner struts to one of said transversely-extending frame members in any one of a plurality of positions to adjust the drawbar angularly with respect to the chassis. 4. A combine comprising a wheeled chassis,
threshing apparatus mounted thereon comprising a casing extending longitudinally of the tractor travel, and threshing apparatus in general mounted in said casing, said threshing apparatus having swath-cutting and conveying apparatus extending transversely with respect to the thresher and laterally therebeyond, a grain bin for receiving the grain from the threshing apparatus mounted above and extending across said casing, a framework for supporting said grain bin and casing from said chassis comprising upright members extending upwardly from said chassis and embracing and secured to the sides of said casing and secured to said bin, a laterally-adjustable drawbar including at least three corner struts extending longitudinally of the drawbar and secured together at their front ends, the rear ends of two of said struts being located, one above the other, and pivotally secured to one of said upright members, and means for securing the other of said corner struts, laterally of the first-mentioned struts, to said chassis in any one of a plurality of positions to adjust the drawbar angularly about the pivotal connections of said first-mentioned struts with respect to the chassis.
5. In an implement including a harvester, a crop processing casing associated therewith, a conveyor disposed to transport harvested crop material from said harvester to said crop processing casing, a storage bin for processed material, a conveyor leading from said casing to said bin, a wheeled chassis frame including an upright portion, said frame arranged to support said harvester, said casing, and said storage bin in cooperating relation to each other, a laterally adjustable drawbar including at least three corner struts extending longitudinally of the drawbar and secured together at their front ends, the rear ends of two of said struts being located one above the other and pivotally secured to said chassis frame, and means for securing the other of said corner struts, laterally of the firstmentioned struts, to said chassis frame in any one of a plurality of positions to adjust the drawbar angularly about the pivotal connections of said first-mentioned struts with respect to the chassis frame.
6. In an implement including a harvester, a crop processing casing associated therewith, a conveyor disposed to transport harvested crop material from said harvester to said crop processing casing, a storage bin for processed material, a conveyor leading from said casing to said bin, a wheeled chassis frame including an upright portion, said frame arranged to support said harvester, said casing, and said storage bin in cooperating relation to each other, a laterally adjustable drawbar including at least three corner struts extending longitudinally of the drawbar and secured together at their front ends, the rear ends of two of said struts being located, one adjacent said bin and above the other, and pivotally secured to said chassis frame, and means for securing the other of said corner struts, laterally of the first-mentioned struts, to said chassis frame in any one of a plurality of positions to adjust the drawbar angularly about the pivotal connection of said firstmentioned struts with respect to the chassis frame.
7. In an implement including a harvester, a crop processing casing associated therewith, a conveyor disposed to transport harvested crop material from said harvester to said crop processing casing, a storage bin for processed mationed struts and said brace with respect to the terial, a conveyor leading from said casing to chassis frame.
