. W L Ai UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- EDGAR O. HUNT, OF MELROSE, MASSACHUSETTS.
VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,396,"dated July 4, 1882.
' Application filed May 18, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR HUNT, of Mclrose, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vises, of which the'followin g is a descriptionsufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, which drawing is an isometrical perspective view.
My invention relates to a vise designed for the use of plumbers in making what are known as"wipe-joints; and it consists in a 'novel construction and arran gement of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a more effective device of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.
In making wipe-joints by the usual method the two parts or sections of the pipe to be united have to be supported by means of boards, joist, brick, or in any other convenient manner, sometimes being tied together or held together by the'hands, rendering the process very slow, and frequently very imperfect, difficulties which my improvement entirely obviates.
In the drawing, A represents the body or bed-piece of the vise, B G the head-stocks, and D' the auxiliary or side stock.
The head-stocks are mounted on horizontal slides E E, which are'fitted to work in corresponding openings in the ends of the body A, and are made adjustable therein by the screws G G. The side stock is also mounted on a horizontal slide, H, which is fitted to work in.
Mounted in the head-stocks, and'supported thereby, are clamps or clutches K L 0, each composed of the two jaws xz, the clutches be- .ing respectively attached to the stocks by balland-socket joints m m and provided with setscrews N P. The pipe is grasped and held in that part of the jaws w 2 which is just below the meeting edges c and above the screw N, and said edges are halved, or so constructed as to interlock, in order that the jaws may be separated to grasp a large pipe without permitting it to escape therefrom as readily as it would were the edges 1) squared or straight.
In the use of my improvement the clutches of the head-stocks B O are adjusted to the pipe and the ends of the two sections of pipe brought together, where they are held by the screws G until the joint is formed, the screws d P N being also used to secure the parts to which they pertain.
The auxiliary or side stock, D, is employed forholding a pipe or faucet which has to be joined at an angle to the pipe in the headstocks B O. It will be obvious that'the vise is adapted not only to holding straight pipe, but also that which is bent or crooked, the stocks and their jaws being made adjustable to enable this to be readily accomplished.
Having thus explained my improvement, what I claim is- -1. The improved vise described, consisting of the body A, slides E E, screws G, headstooks B G, clutches K L, and screws d P N, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth. f
2. In a vise, substantially such as described, the side stock, D, clutch O, and slide H, sub stantially as specified.
