PICKING MOTION FOR. UNDERPICK LOOMS Kurt Schwabe, Le Locle, Switzerland Application December 6, 1949, Serial No. 131,374 In Switzerland December 8, 1948 6.0l'aims.
The invention relates to picking motions for under pick looms and has the principal object of providing a picking motion which establishes a positive connection of the picking stick to its driving member, capable of transmitting. both impact and tensile forces to. the picking stick, and which dispenses with flexible or resilient members such as leather loops or springs.
It is another object of the invention to provide a picking motion which allows the adjustment of the effective length of the linkage between the picking stick and its driving member.
It is still another object of the invention to provide apioking motion which allows the longitudinal movement. of the driving point on the picking stick whereby the strength of the pick can be adjusted.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the description of an embodiment thereof. later in the specification.
According to a main feature of the invention the picking motion comprises in combination: a picking stick, a ball joint arranged intermediate the length of said picking stick, and linkage means of an adjustable length arranged for being articulated to the said picking stick by the said ball joint and for transmitting the picking movement and the return movement to the said picking stick.
In order that the invention may be better understood and readily carried into effect, an embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a picking stick with picking motion for under pick looms in frontal elevation, partly in section,
Fig. 2 is a section on an enlarged scale along the line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the ball joint on an enlarged scale effecting the connection with the picking stick on a larger scale, partly in section,
Fig. 4 is a plan view of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is an axial section through the components of the ball joint of Fig. 3 in that relative position in which they can be assembled and separated from one another.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view, on an enlarged scale, of a part of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Reference I denotes part of the frame of the loom (which otherwise is not shown), wherein an axle 2 is journalled. On the end of that axle which projects from the inner side of the said frame I the slay sword 3 is pivoted. On the end of the axle 2 which projects from the outer side of the said frame I a bracket 4 for the foot of the picking stick is arranged, intowhich an. axle 5 is inserted, on whichthe picking stick 6 is pivoted. On the picking stick 6 there is arranged a component of a joint I in the shape of the middle portion of a spherical zone having equal .end faces and having a prismatic. aperture. wherein the picking stick is lodged; This component 1 of the joint is clamped on to the picking stick 6 by means of a screw 8 which penetrates through a longitudinal slot 9 therein, and lies in a ring H) having a correspondingly spherical inner. surface. On its circumference this ring ID has a lug H projecting radially outward. On two points lying opposite one another on a diameter perpendicular to the direction of the lug II, the ring ii] has at its lower half internal recesses 12 which allow the insertion of the component 'I' of the joint into the ring 10 or its withdrawal therefrom when turned relatively to the ring l6 with respect to the operative position (the position of the ring, Fig. 5, as shown also in Fig. 4 in dotted lines); When the component I of the joint is then turned in the ring I0 about the axis of the latter, it forms a ball joint together with it.
The lug ll of the ring flies in a slot of an intermediate piece l3, and is rigidly connected to the latter by means. of rivets l4. On the other end of this intermediate piece l3, as is shown in Fig. 6, a threaded bolt! 8 is attached by means of rivets I5, which bolt is screwed into one end of a tapped socket 17 having rightandlefthand thread. A. threaded bolt I8 is screwed into the other end of the said tapped socket H. In the threaded bolt It a square rod 19 is, fixed, the end of which is guidedaxially in a square hole 20 of. the threaded bolt i8 in such a man'- ner that, when turning the tapped socket H, the threaded bolts l6 and 18 change their distance but do not turn with respect to one another. The threaded bolt It has a forked head 2! wherein a component 22 of a joint is held by a bolt 23. This component 22 of a joint is articulated on a shaft 24 which is turned to-and-fro, by means of the picking mechanism of the loom (not shown in the drawing).
The ball joint formed by the component 1 and the ring [0 allows the tilting of the picking stick 6 about the axle 5 as well as the tilting of the latter about the axle 2 together with the bracket 4 for the foot of the picking stick. By turning the tapped socket i! into which the threaded bolt l6 and the threaded bolt 18 are screwed with right-hand and left-hand thread, respectively, the distance between the axis of articulation at the end of the lever 25 and the centre of the ball joint formed by the component 1 and the ring It] can be adjusted. Thereby and owing to the fact that the component 1 of the joint can be shifted within the limits of the slot 9 of the picking stick wherein the screw 8 lies, the strength of pick of the picking stick 6 can be adjusted.
The intermediate piece l3 can be made of any desired material and need not be flexible. With the picking motion for under pick looms as described it is possible to transmit not only tensile forces but also impacts on to the picking stick. The spring hitherto used for causing the return movement of the picking stick can consequently be dispensed with.
While I have illustrated, and described hereinabove, a useful embodiment of my invention I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A picking motion for under pick looms comprising in combination: a picking stick, a convex member in the shape of the middle portion of a spherical zone havinga central aperture for the said picking stick, clamping means arranged for Q clamping the said convex member to the said stick intermediate its length, a ring member having a spherical inner surface adapted to serve as a bearing for the said convex member, and linkage means attached to the said ring member and adapted to transmit the picking movement and the return movement to the said picking stick.
2. A picking motion for under pick looms comprising in combination: a picking stick, a convex member in the shape of the middle portion of a spherical zone traversed by and clamped to the said picking stick intermediately its length, a ring member having a spherical inner surface adapted to serve as a bearing for the said convex member and having a radially outward projecting lug, and linkage means arranged for being attached to the said lug, the said ring having two recesses of a width corresponding to that of the said convex member arranged opposite one another on a diameter angularly off-set from the working position of the said convex member and adapted to allow the insertion of the said convex member into and its withdrawal from the said ring member when turned into juxtaposition with the said convex member.
3. A picking motion for under pick looms comprising in combination: a picking stick having an elongated longitudinal slot intermediately its length, a convex ball joint member, a clamping screw traversing the said convex ball joint member and the said slot and arranged for adjustably clamping the said convex ball joint member to the said stick within the limits of the said slot, a concave ball joint member cooperating with the said convex ball joint member, and linkage means of an adjustable length arranged for being connected to the said concave member and for transmitting the picking movement and the return movement to the said picking stick.
4. A picking motion for under pick looms comprising in combination: a picking stick, a convex ball joint member arranged intermediately the length of the said picking stick, a concave.ball joint member arranged for cooperating with the said convex ball joint member, a first threaded member radially attached to the said concave ball joint member, a right-hand and left-handthreaded turnbuckle member in screw connection with the said first threaded member, and a second threaded member in screw connection with the said turnbuckle member and arranged for imparting the picking movement and return movement to the said picking stick through the said turnbuckle member, first threaded member and ball joint members.
5. A picking motion for under pick looms as claimed in claim 5 comprising slidable connecting means attached to the said first and second threaded members, respectively, and arranged for restraining them from turning relatively to one another while allowing relative axial movement thereof.
6. A picking motion for under pick looms comprising, in combination, a picking stick, a convex member mounted on said picking stick, said convex member being in the shape of the middle portion of a spherical zone having a central aperture through which said picking stick extends, a ring member having a spherical inner surface adapted to serve as a bearing for said convex member, and linkage means attached to said ring member and adapted to transmit the picking movement and the return movement to said picking stick.
