PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. ROBERTS, OF PATTONVILLE, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO NOAH M. RISE,
OF SAME PLACE.
COTTON CHCPPER AND HARRO W.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,716, dated December 26, 1882.
Application niea June 11, 1882. (N model.)
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Pattonville, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cotton Choppers and Harrows; and 1 do hereby declare that'the following is a lull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, referto ence being bad to the annexed drawings,mak-
ing a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of my device. Fig. 2 is a side view with the near wheel removed. Fig. 3 isacross-sectional view on line as 00, Fig. 1. Fig.4 is a plan view, showing the barrow attached, and Fig. 5 is a side view of the barrow attachment.
This invention has relation to cotton choppers and barrows; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as
" will be herernafterfully described and claimed.
Referring by letter to the accom'panyingdrawings, a designates the axle, and b b the supporting-wheels. Converging and slightly curved arms 0 c are let into recesses d d in the upper face of the axle a,and are secured at their forward ends to a straight arm, 6, let into a middle reress,f,in the upper face of the axle a, as
shown in thedrawings. These three arms 0 c and e are hinged near their juncture, and are let into recesses g g g in the under face of a lateral bar, h, from the ends of which vertical standards i i depend, as shown.
Upon the arms 0 c and 6, between the lateral bar It and the axle a, are secured curved racks k, and to one side of each of said arms is pivoted a hand-lever, l, engaging said racks 70. From the hand-levers lchains m extend over sheaves n, pivoted on standards 0, therear ends of said chains at being adapted to engage the beams of the harrow or cotton-chopper sections. Referring first to the cotton-chopper sections, of which there are three, designated by the letters 1) p and p, the former being the side sections and the latter the central one, which latter has two longitudinal beams, q, while the side sections have but one beam, q,
it will be seen from the drawings that these beams q q and q are hinged at their forward wardly and rearwardly to the under face of the axle, to which they are secured by bolts or otherwise.
'lhe rear ends of the beams 11 p and p are provided with section-bars u u and a, the lat- 6o ter being the central section-bar. From these section bars depend forwardly -curved and pointed standards Q), threaded at their upper ends to receive securing-nuts o, and provided at their lower ends with forwardly-inclined 6 knives to, as shown.
From the beams q of the central S80Ll0ll,1), handles w 00 extend rearwardly and upwardly, and are .bolted to standards 2 z, rising from the central section-bar, a, and connected near their upper ends by a double rack, a, serrated near each end in its forward edge, the serrations pointing inwardly from said standardsz z. Braces b I) extend forward from the under face of the central section-bar, a, near each 7 5 end, to the under faces of the beams q of the central SBCllOll,1)', to add additional strength. Levers c c'are pivoted at their lower ends to the front face of the central section-bar, u, and near the ends thereof, and extend upwardly above the double rack n and engage the serrations of the same.
From the levers c c, slightly below their middle portions, pivoted perforated arms d extend, and are connected by pivots e to the inner or 8 forward faces of the side section-bars, u a, as shown, the object of the perforations in said arms being to permit a greater lateral adjustment of the bar-sections than could be acc0mplished bythe use of thelevers cc alone when it is desired to leave larger or smaller cottonstands.
Standardsf depend from the beams q q and from a cross-bar. 9, connecting the beamsq of the central section, a, and are provided at 5 their lowerends with wheels h, which ride over the ridges in advance of the knives and pre vent the latter from cutting too deeply, and thereby impeding the draft of the implement. Thechains,\viththeirlevers,racks,andsheaves, 10o
permit the knives and wheels h to be elevated and permitted to remain inoperative when the implement is being transported from place to place. The chopper is to be driven across the ridges, the cotton-stands being left between the knives. the portions not needed being cut away bytheknives. ln cultivating the cotton the chopper-sections are removed by detaching the cross-bar s from the standardsi 'i, and
the cross-bar i of the hinged barrow-sections k k is secured to said standards.
The beams l l of the lJtUIOWSPCllOllS are secured to the cross-bar i in a manner similar to the beams of the chopper-sections, and are provided with converging tooth-bars m m and handles n n, as shown. Connections for the elevating-chains are. also provided, in order that the barrow-sections may be-rendered in-.
with the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings.
Hinged beams carrying teeth and cuttingblades and provided with levers and connecting-bars have been before used in cnltivators, cotton -choppers, &c., and are not broadly claimed herein.
Having" thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a cotton-rhopper, the combination, with the wheeled vehicle, of the side. and central section'bars carrying the inclined knives, the handles secured to the central section, the donbleTacl; connecting'said handles, the adjust ingdevers pivoted to the central section, and the pivoted perforated arms connecting the levers and outer section-bars, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE WHITFIELD ROBERTS.
