(Cl. 155-188) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination reclining chairs and hair dry ers designed for use in beauty shops and the like and wherein the chair is provided with an adjustable support for the dryer to arrange the latter in its most advantageous position with respect to the occupant of the chair.

An important object of the invention is to provide an improved adjustable back rest construction including a head rest of netting and attaching dryer supporting means to the back rest for supporting a dryer above the head rest.

Another important object is to provide a hair dryer support having vertical as well as forwardly and rearwardly swingable adjusting means.

A further object is to provide an improved chair construction having an adjustable back and an adjustable foot rest connected to each other for uniform raising and lowering movement and providing a manipulating lever therefor.

A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view;

Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the vertical adjusting means for the dryer;

Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken on a line 4-4 of Figure 3;

Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the swinging adjustment for the dryer taken on a line 5-5 of Figure 2;

Figure 6 is an enlarged perspective view of the head rest; and

Figure 7 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the manipulating lever taken on a line 77 of Figure 1.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration we have disclosed a preferred embodiment of our invention, the numeral 5 designates the inclining chair generally preferably constructed of metal tubing and i cluding a pair of substantially U- shaped side members 6 and 7 inverted to form front and rear legs 8 and 9 and an arm rest 10. Front and rear wheels 11 and 12 are mounted on the legs, the rear wheels preferably being of a caster or swivel type.

A seat 13 is supported on rear and front transverse bars 14 and 15 which are connected to the side members 6 and 7 and a back rest 16 is swingably connected adjacent its lower end on or near rear bar 14 and a foot rest 17 is swingably connected at its upper end to front bar 15. Arms 18 extend downwardly at the lower portion of back rest 16 below its pivot and one or more drag bars 19 connect the arms to foot rest 17 for simultaneous and uniform raising and lowering swinging movement of the back rest and foot rest.

A lever 20 is pivoted to seat 13 and is connected at its lower end to drag bar 19 to actuate the latter and the lever is held in a selected position by a spring projected ball catch 21 carried by the lever and adapted to enter a series of recesses 22 in the arm rest 10.

A pair of brackets 23 are secured to the back of back rest 16 and to which a T-shaped tubular hair dryer supporting member 24 is pivoted in an inverted position to provide an upstanding tube or sleeve 25 in which a rack bar 26 is slidable and actuated by a pinion 27 enclosed in a housing 28 formed on tube or sleeve 25. The pinion is secured on a shaft 29 which projects outwardly of the housing and to which a manipulating knob 30 is secured.

An electric hair dryer 31 is adjustably secured to the upper end of rack bar 26 by means of a thumb nut 32.

The hair dryer supporting member 24 is swingably adjusted by means of a feed screw 33 rotatably held in an eye 34 at one side of the member 24 and threaded into an internally threaded sleeve 35 on a universal joint 36 which is secured to back rest 16. The screw 33 is provided with a manipulating knob 37 to feed the screw inward and outwardly of sleeve 35 to thus swing the dryer supporting member 24 forwardly and rearwardly.

The top of back rest 16 is curved to conform to the neck of a person occupying the chair and a pair of upstanding arms 38 are welded or otherwise suitably secured at their lower ends in spaced parallel relation to each other to the upper portion of the back rest and to which netting material 39 is secured in a stretched position to form a head rest.

Briefly, the manner of operation of the invention may be explained as follows. The person occupying the chair may adjust the angle of back rest 16 and foot rest 17 by swinging lever 20 either forwardly or rearwardly and dryer 31 may be raised or lowered by manipulating knob 30 for rack bar 26 and the dryer may be inclined forwardly or rearwardly bv manipulating knob 37 for screw 33. The dryer may also be secured in forwardly or rearwardly tilted position by thumb nut 32.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparcut to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new 1. The combination of a chair including a back, and means carried by the back adapted for supporting an electrical device in a position above the head of a person occupying the chair, said means comprising a pair of brackets attached to the back, an inverted T-shaped member swingably supported at its lower portion by the brackets for forward and rearward swinging movement relative to the back, said member having a hollow upper end portion, a vertically slidable rack bar supported in the I upper end of said member and to which said electrical device is attached, manipulating means carried by the member for slidably actuating the rack bar to raise and lower the electrical device, and manually manipulated means connecting the said member to the chair back.

2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said last named means comprises a feed screw carried by said inverted T-shaped member, an internally threaded sleeve connected to the screw, and a universal joint connecting the sleeve to the chair back.
