Dec. 14, 1954 M, MERSHEIN 2,696,614
UNDERGARMEN T Filed May 1, 1952 will ` INVENTOR. Mathias Imershein ATTokNI-:Y
United States Patent Office 2,696,614 Patented Dec. 14, 1954 2,695,614 UNDERGARMENT Mathias Imershein, New York, N. Y., assignor to Graceform-Camlin Corset Co., Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application May 1, 1952, Serial No. 285,397 Claims. (Cl. 2-36) womans undergarments; and, class of such undergarments invention is to provide a to the softer portions of the front provides a means for flattening the diaphragm and the abdomen. The inelastic central panel of the rear porgirdle, also being specially reinforced by anshaped to conform to the softer the wearers body, attening bulges of in taut condition.
A further object of the invention is to provide a girdle, or like undergarment, having the features described above, and being sleeve-shaped to conform to the wearers trunk from the waist down, with means for opening and closing the sleeve at one side thereof between the waist line and a point therebelow, for facilitating donning and removal of the garment.
vent the garment from rolling from the waist.
A particular feature of the invention is the provision of shaped inelastic panels in the center of the front and rear portions of the garment. The provision of inelastic central panels at the front and rear of garments of this type, these being joined by elastic panels having pronounced horizontal stretchability, is shown in applicants United States Patent Re. 21,595; but the inelastic panels are arranged merely to cover the front and rear portions of the wearers body broadly, and the outlines of these panels are not shaped to conform to P greatest natural bulge of the abdomen.
the outlines of those softer portions of the wearers body sought to be llattened. Also, in the structure shown in the patent referred to, no inelastic side panels are provided, and, accordingly, the bulges at the outsides of the thighs of the wearer can be confined only by elastic It has been found that the introduction of inelastic side panels produces a more satisfactory and more attractive garment.
In the present invention the front central inelastic panel is of considerable width at that part corresponding to the normal region of greatest natural bulge of the abdomen and where the maximum flattening effect is desirable; and, downwardly from such part, the panel narrows to a point at the lower edge of the garment. The rear central inelastic panel is of greatest width at that part corresponding to the normal region of greatest natural bulge of the buttocks. The crossed series of parallel bands with which these two panels are reinforced have the effect of evenly distributing the compression desired at the body portions mentioned above; and the girdle, when worn, produces a very graceful appearance of the lower portion of the wearers trunk, yet does not impair mobility or discomfort her.
These and other objects and features of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description and from the drawing, in which one form of the invention is shown.
, In the drawing:
Fig. l is a front View, partly broken away, of a girdle constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the girdle.
The girdle is a sleeve, designed to conform to the lower portion of the trunk of the wearer and adapted to be partly opened and closed at one side. The sleeve comprises, as will be seen, a series of alternating elastic and inelastic panels, all extending from the waist line of the garment to the lower edge thereof.
The front portion 1 of the girdle, seen in Fig. l, cornprises a central composite inelastic panel 2, the outline of which approximates the outline of the softer regions of the front of the wearers body, i. e., the diaphragm and the abdomen. It will be noted that the widest part of the panel, at 3, corresponds to the normal region of Downwardly from this part the panel tapers toward the lower edge of the garment. Panel 2 is a laminated structure. Its front and rear plies 4 and 5 may be of net, lace, or other fabric. Between these two plies is a third ply 6, preferably of marquisette. Extending from side to side of the panel, except at the narrowed part near the lower portion of the garment, and secured to the ply 6 are two diagonally crossed series of parallel bands 7 of fabric having a considerable tensile strength. In fact the resistance of the panel to horizontal stretch may derive almost wholly from the bands 7, and the plies 4 and 5, which cover the network of bands, and ply 6, may be of relatively llimsy material, as suggested. Applied to the rear of the panel, on either side of its center line, and extending downwardly from the waist line of the garment, are two narrow vertical pockets 8, each adapted to carry a reinforcing bone 8a to prevent the girdle from rolling at the waist in the front.
Secured to the sides of panel 2 are elastic panels 9 and 10, each having pronounced horizontal stretchability. Panels 9 and 10 are other hand to each other, but otherwise alike. The horizontal stretchability of panels 9 and 10 is modified in certain areas by parallel lines 11 and 12 of zigzag or other suitable stitching, as clearly shown in Fig. l, such lines being disposed as guys to tighten panel Z in the greatest degree at that part corresponding to the region of maximum natural protrusion of the abdomen.
The rear portion 13 of the girdle, seen in Fig. 2, comprises a central composite panel 14, the outline of which approximates the outline of the softer regions of the back of the wearers body, i. e., particularly the lobes of the buttocks. Accordingly, the widest part 15 of the panel 14 is near the lower edge thereof. Like panel 2, panel 14 is a laminated structure. Its outer and inner plies 16 and 17 may be of net, lace, or other fabric.
