SEPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,449, dated December 19, 1882.
Application filed August 7, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JAMEs ODoNNELL, of
' San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Balanced Steam-Valve, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to obtain abalanced steam-valve that will workwith but slight friction and wear, and also to provide for convenient adjustment of the parts.
To that end my invention consists in a covering-plate which is combinedwith the valve of the steam chest and connected to an adjustable yoke, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a steam-cylinder and valve-chest having my improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is-a sectional plan view on the line .00 w of Fig. 1.

A is the cylinder. B is the valve-chest; and C is the valve, which is an ordinary slide-valve of bridge form. I) is the cap or covering of the valve, which is formed with side flanges, i, of a width to cover the side of the valve, but is left open at the ends, so that the steam has free access to the space beneath the plate and to the ends of the valve. Vithin the steam-chest and secured upon the cylinder are posts h h, placed atthe corners of the plate D. In the upper ends of these posts hare pivoted the ends of yokes l, there being two of these yokes jointed together at their ends over the center of the plate. The yokes are also pivoted to the studs m on the plate I), and at their inner ends are jointed to a screw-rod, 0, which extends through the top or coverot' the stea m-chest, and is titted at its upper end with a nut for its adjustment. The yokes land the adjusting-screw 0 are for use in adjusting the plate D tightly to the top of the valve, and this may be done from the outside by drawing Fig. 5 shows the screw 0 up or down by means of its nut, as required. Around the mid-length of the plate 1) passes a strap. S, which is connected to the cylinder, and prevents the plate from rising too far.- The valve is packed at its sides by means of a packing-plate, t, which is inserted between the side of the valve and one flange iot the plate, and this packing-plate t is provided with pins that enter openings in the side of the valve, which openings contain springs tending to force the packing-plate out- Ward.
It will be seen that the plate or cover D takes the steam-pressure off the upper side of the valve, so that the steam has access only to the ends of the valve, and the pressure upon these ends will be equal. For this reason there will be little friction and wear in the movement of the valve, and the plate, bcingreadily adjustable, will compensate for wear. The parts may be kept steam-tight at all times. This device may be applied to stationary, locomotive, or other engines.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a steam-valve, the combination, with the plateor cap D, arranged to rest upon the valve C, of the approximately U-shaped yokes l, each being pivoted at one end-to a fixed point of the steam-cylinder and connected to the plate or cap D, and the adjusting-screw 0, having its lower end forked and connected to a pin uniting the meeting ends of the yokes I, said screw being passed up through the steam-chest and fitted with a holding-nut and adapted, together with the yokes I, to hold the plate D tightly upon the valve, and to regulate the pressure of the said plate upon the valve, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a steam-valve, the combination, with the plate or cap D, arranged to rest upon the valve C, and having depending flanges 2' disposed alongside the valve, and an elevation or shoulder upon the steam-cylinder, and the steam chest B, of the approximately U-shaped yokes l l, pivoted to the posts h of the steamcylinder A, and connected to the plate D, and the nutted adjustingscrew 0, connected to the convergent ends of the yokes l l, and passed up through the steam-chest B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a steam-valve, the combination of the cylinder A, steam-chest B, valve 0, cap or plate D, having depending flanges '5 arranged alongside the valve, and an elevation or shoulder of the cylinder A, the strap S, adapted to limit the upward movement 0f. the plate D, the approximately U-shaped yokes l, and the no nutted adjusting-screw 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
