HAND-VISE FOR BROOCH-PINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,446, dated December 19, 1882.
Application filed May 8, 1882. (Model) To all whom it may concern Be it known that 'I, MYER Moss, ot' Yarmouth,in the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada, have invented a new and Improved Hand-Vise for Brooch-Pins, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists of an improved tool for jewelers use in the repair of brooches or breastpins, the said tool consisting of a pair ofjaws on a suitable handle, and with suitable devices to cause thejaws to grip and hold, the said jaws being contrived, by means of a series of'transverse grooves in the face of one of them and a longitudinal groove in the face of the other, and also by a series of graduations in the breadth ofthejaws, to hold the tongue or pin, together with its pivot, for fitting the pivot, as to its required length for the eye portion of thejoint ot' the brooch to which a new tongue or pin is to be applied, all as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of the said improved tool, taken on the line as a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a section of Fig. 1 on line 3 y. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section on line 22, Fig. l.
A represents a suitable handle, with a conical expanding nut, B, fitted to work forward and backward along it freely by screwing it back and forth on the threadsO by the milled disk E of said nut.
F and G represent a pair ofjaws, pivoted to ears H of the handle at I, and having shanks J extending backward along the cone B, to be expanded by it for closing the jaws. K represents springs attached to the handle A, and bearing againstjawsF G to open them. Jaw G has aseries of transverse grooves, L, traversing its face, said grooves being of suitable size to admit the eye of the brooch-pin atits pivotjoint, as represented in Fig. 1. Jaw F has a longitudinal groove, M, along its face, and both jaws are graduated in thickness from the inner ends outward by successive steps N,
making four sections, Q, in all, of different thickness; but more or less, may be made, as preferred.
0 represents the pin or tongue of the brooch or breastpin, and P the pivot of said tongue, to be applied to a brooch in the place of one broken orlost. The tongue 0, having its pivot P attached to it,is applied to the tool as shown, said tongue 0 being in groove M and the pivot P in one of the grooves L. The tool is then applied to the eye-piece on the brooch where the pivot P is to be secured, to com pare the breadth ot'said eye with thewidth of thejawsin the said graduated part, to ascertain which section Q corresponds with the breadth of said eye. The pivot P is then set in the grooveL of the right section so found, which section is then a gage by which to file the ends of the pivot; to the right length for the eye of the brooch to which the said pivot is to be applied in attaching the tongue. The said ends of the pivot are then filed off until the file comes to the hardened faces Q of the jaws, and the pin is then ready to be applied to the brooch.
It will be seen that besides being a convenient device for holding and gaging the pivot,
the tool will also prevent bending the ends of the pivot, which often occurs when holding it in the ordinary hand-vise.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and des re to secure by Letters 'Patent 1. The combination of a pair of grippingjaws, F G, with a handle, A, and gripping devices, said jaws being graduated by successive steps N,in the breadth of their faces, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a pair of jaws, F G, with a handle, A, and gripping devices, said jaws being graduated in the breadth of their faces by successive steps N, substantially as described, and having transverse grooves in the face of one jaw and a longitudinal groove in the face of the other jaw, substantially as specified.
3. The improved jewelers vise, coi-isisting of handle A, adjusting conical not B, jaws F G, and springs K, said jaws being graduated in the breadth of the faces, and one having transverse grooves and the other having a longitudinal groove, substantially as. described.
