E. B. SMITH.
LAMP LIGHTER. No. 269,241. Patented Dec.19, 1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- EDWARD 'B. SMITH, OF RIOHLAND, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PATRICK H. GILKEY, OF SAME PLACE.
LAM P-LIGHTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of. Letters Patent No. 269,241, dated December 19, 1882,
Application filed October 27, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom ttmay concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richland, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Lam p-Lighter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the construction of a device for lightinga lamp, consisting V of a percussion-wick, means for raising it, a
friction-shot bolt or hammer for causing said wick toignite, and a gate for extinguishing the percussion-wick by fixing a limit to its consumption.
In the drawings forming apart of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a part of the construction, looking from the body of the lamp upward against the under face of the burner; Fig. 2, top view; Fig. 3, vertical section on dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2; Figs. 4 and 6, detached parts hereinafter described, and Fig.5 the percussion-wick.
R is the main wick-tube, with wick L. T is the burner. A vertical tube, B, is located at one side of tube R, and is provided with the percussion-wick F. This wick may be made of fabric coated with any substance which will ignite by friction. Said wick F is raised by toothed wheels at of the revoluble shaft a, Figs. 1, 3, 4. The friction-shot P for causing the percussion-wick to ignite is thrown out or shot by spring 1' 7'. It is provided with arms a a, which have downwardly-extending lugs S S at each end, Figs. 1 and 3. The shaft a is provided with arms or loops 0 0, which, when said shaft is revolved, engage lugs S S, for the purpose explained in the operation.
'v is a swing-actuated gate, pivoted in a position to shut against the percussion-wick F,
preventing said wick from burning below this point, Figs. 1, 3, 6. Gate '0 is provided at one end with a downward extension, e, which is acted upon by one of the arms 0 at the proper time to shut said gate against the wick.
In the operation the shaft a is revolved,
which turns up the percussion-wick F, and by the engagement of arms 0 c withiugs' S S the friction-shot P is thrown back away from the wick. As soon as arms 0 c release the lugs S S the friction-shot is thrown forward by the elastic force of springs M", the pointed end engaging the wiclvand lighting it One of the arms a then engages 'the extension o of gate a, shutting said gate against the wick, as before stated.
The device having plates D and A, here shown, is especially intended for a lantern; but my lighter may be applied to any style lamp desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A lamp-burner having a percussion-wick tube located at the side of the tube containing the wick to be lighted, in combination with a friction-shot, a gate for limiting the consumption of the percussion-wick, and means for 6 raising said wick. and for operating the friction shot and gate, substantially as set forth.
2. The percussion-wick and the re'voluble shaft for raising it, provided with the arms for operating the friction-shot, in combination with said shot provided with the lugs for engagement with said .arms, substantially as specified and shown.
3. [n a lamp-lighting device, the conibination, with a percussion-wick and ineansfor raising it, provided. with the arms, of a fric tion-shot provided with the arms and lugs, and a gate having a projection for engaging one of said shaftaruis, substantially as described and shown.
4. The shaft having the looparms and the gate provided with the extension for engaging one of said arms, in combination withthe wick.
EDWARD B. SMITH.
