Miren STATES PATENT Ormea EDWARD M. OOINTEPAS, OF BOSTON, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, T() CHARLES H. WARD, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
GA LVAN l C BATTERY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,179, dated December 19, 1882.
Application filed January 20, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom fit may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD MARK OO1NTE- PAS, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Galvanic Batteries; and I do hereby declare the following to be a t'ull, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of referencemanked thereon, which form a part ot' this specification.
This invention relates to galvanic batteries provided with attachments, and adapted to be used to produce a small incandescent light intended for domestic uses; and it consists,-
in combination with an acid-jar provided with a removable cover,- ot the slab secured to the under side of said cover, and the carbon plates beveled at the top and secured to and depending from the under side of said slab, and a pole ot' the battery, which is attached to a boss erected upon said slab, in the manner and for y, the purpose substantially7 as hereinafter set shown at E E as secured to and depending manner by which it may be readily removed and applied.
The carbon plates, beveled at the top, are
from the under side of a slab, F, which is composed of lead and'antimony amalgamated,
" and is secured to the vunder side otl the cover C of the vessel B, and has a central opening, a', said carbon plates being immersed permanently in the exciting-liquid in the said jar.
The-disk or block of zinc is shown at G, between the carbon plates E E, and preferably or other insulating material, inserted centrally in such cover, a button, c, being secured to the top of such stem H.` The normal position ot' the zinc G is above and out et' Contact with the exciting-liquid, and is suspended iu this i normal position by a. wire, d, of brass or other suitable metal, which constitutes one ot the poles of the battery, one end of this wire being secured to the top ot the stem H, while its body is coiled about such stem and rests upon the top of the cover o1: the bearing-hub I, and thence joins one end ot' a coil, c', of hard platinum wire disposed above the cover O.
fThe opposite pole of the apparatus is a copper tube, y, such tube at one end screwing into the top of a boss, h, erected upon and cast integral with the plate F of the carbons, and situated over one of said carbons. By
this manner ot' connecting the wire g it is insulated from possibility of contact with the fumes of the exciting-liquid, and hence is protected from the corrosive influence of such fumes. The opposite end of the pole g connects with the opposite end of the platinum coil c. The two poles d and g are thus insulated from each other, but are permanently connected by the platinum coil or spiral c.
The operation of this apparatus is briefly as follows: Depressing the knob c lowers the zinc Gr and immerses it in the excitingliquid in the jar B, and an electric current is thereby established, the circuit being permanently closed by the union of the two poles d and g through the medium of the platinum coil c', as before stated. The coil o' becomes heated to a white heat-iu other words, rendered in# candescent-and capable of igniting paper, wood, a jet of gas, the wick ot' a lamp, Ste.
The rubber tube or cylinder interposed between the stem or suspensory H and the sleeve and spring surrounding it allows contact be- 2 ecsmfo tween said spring and rod only at the top, and slab, and pole g, which is attached to ai boss 1c thus compels the current to pass through the erected upon said slab, in manner and for the spring. purpose substantially as set forth. I claim l In testimony whereof I affix my signa-ture in In combination with the aeidjar B,provided l presence of two witnesses.
` with removable cover C7 the slab F, secured to EDWARD MARK OINTEPAS.
the under side of said cover, and the carbon Witnesses: plates E E, beveled at the top,and secured to H. E. LODGE7 and depending from the under side of said F. CURTIS.
