T. A. H; CAMERON.
WASHING MACHINE.
Patented Dec. 12, 1882 Inventor (Tau/W alt,"
A ttest I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TILMON A. H. CAMERON, OF SALINE ooUNrY, MIssOURI.
WASHING- MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 269,155, dated December 12, 1882,
Application filed June 2, 1880. (No modeld V To all whom it may concern Beit known that I,TILMON A. H. CAMERON,
a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Saline and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts of a washingmachine, as hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l 'is a front elevation of. my machine, partly'in section; Fig. 2,
a vertical section on line as a; of Fig. l.
E represents a hot-water reservoir or washtub, provided with legs and casters, asshown.
Into this tub are placed the legs or side pieces,
G G, of a washing-machine, and secured to the same at the side by screws 8 8 and 'at the bottom by brackets 7 7. When the machine eutirely fills the tub .it is to be fastened at each side by screws 8 S.
H H are a pair of smooth rollers, mounted in side pieces, G G. These rollers may be made of gum, or part gum and part wood, the gum to be over an iron frame, or of any other suitable material. Side pieces, G G, have mortises'or housings cut entirely through them, into which fit the shaft and boxes of the upper roll, H.
a is a leaf-spring, the ends of which fit in the mortises in the side pieces. Spiral springs h h are placed in the housings, and bear upon the caps or boxes of the shaft of the upper smooth roll, and also against the under side of spring 6b, as shown in Fig. 2. Thin plates of metal, Gr G are fastened to the outer sides of the side pieces and over the mortises for the purpose of protecting and keeping in place the caps or boxes on the shaft of the upper smooth roll. A strap or board, 0, placed under the lower smooth roller, H, prevents small fabrics from winding around the lower smooth roller. Said board fits in grooves in the side pieces, G G, and is kept gently pressed against the lower roller by springs z z in the grooves under its ends, as shown in Fig. 1.
I represents a fluted roll, having its bearin gs in the lower ends of curved arms L L. The upper ends of these arms are secured to the side pieces by bolts 6 e. In order to regulate the tension or pressure of the roll I upon the rolls H H, spiral springs may be attached to the ends of the shaft on which the roll I is mounted, and their other ends connected to the frame of the machine, as shown in my Patent No. 221,443, dated November 11, 1879.
When not inuse the fluted roll I is swung back or elevated, the arms L L being thrown back until they rest upon projecting stops on thesides of the machine.
After being placed in the tub of warm Water the clothes are passed back and forth through the smooth rolls by turning the crank d, secured to the shaft of the upper smooth roll, the degree of pressure of the upper roll upon the under one being regulated by the springs h h. When greater pressure is necessaryit is given by the leaf-spring a, adjusted by the thumb-screw 8. Should any streaks of dirt remain after passing through the smooth rolls H H, the clothes are subjected to additional and greater friction by turning a crank, t, on the end of the shaft of roll I, which is swung down opposite the space between the smooth, rolls. Simultaneously with the action of the fluted roll upon the clothes warm water should be poured upon them.
Having described my invention, what Iclaim is- In a washing-machine,'the combination of the side pieces, G G, smooth rollers. H H, the
' port the ends of the board 0, the spiral springs h it, placed in recesses formed in the side pieces above the upper smooth roller, the leaf-spring a, resting on said spiral springs. and the adjusting thumb-screw s, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
TILMON A. H. CAMERON.
