FATE-N FFIC 5' PHILIP RICHARDS, OF WILKES-BARRE, PENNSYLVANIA.
V FlRE-GRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,115, dated December 12, 1882.
Application filed October 24, 1882. (No model.)
To all'whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILIP RICHARDS, of Wilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Grates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and-exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my improved firegrate. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the shaking-device, andFig. 4 is a detail view of one of the grate-bars.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to fire-grates; and
it consists in theimprove d construction, combination, and arrangement of parts-thereof, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A represents the fire-place or furnace of a steam boiler, heating-furnace, or stove, and B is the ash-pit.
O is the front plate of the fire-place, provided with a door ot'any suitable construction,
and opening to the ash-pit under the grate, provided with suitable dampers.
D indicates the grate-bars, which are laid longitudinallyin the fire-place, and reston three sets of rollers, E, F, and G. The grate-bars consist of two flat heads, H and I, the front one, 11, of which has alongitudinal slot,J,provided with a cross-pin, K. The upper surface of the central part of the bar consists of a series of V-shaped projections, L, alternately higher and lower, the ends of which project on both sides of the belly-flange M, while their points are pointing rearward. The two heads H and I and a plate, N, on the under side of the belly-flange M rest on the three rows of rollers E, F, and G, which each consists of the rollers O, journaled on the shaft P,which again is journaled in bearings Q, supported under the grate in any desired manner.
The shaking device is fastened to the front plate, 0, and protected from the fire and ashes from the fire-place by a plate, R, hingedto the vided with a series of pitmen or books, X,
which are hinged upon them and engage the cross-pins K-of the grate-bars--one upper and one lower hook-alternately.
It will readily be seen by the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that by moving the bandle V the hooks will draw every other bar forward and push every other bar back, and by repeating the motion it will shake the ashes from the fire. The ashes will fall down in the ash-pit through the spaces between the projections; and this construction of a grate-bar will also serve to keep it' cool and prevent it from burning out or warping, as the air-draft will continually rise between the projections and keep the'bar cool. The rollers beingjournaled on a shaft, which again in its turn is journaled in bearings supporting the three sets of rollers, will assist in their turning easy and prevent their stopping entirely, as if one roller sticks fast to the shaft by expansion of the the shalt will turn in its bearings with the roller, or in the case of the shaft getting fast in its bearings the rollers will turn upon it.
The whole shaking device will enable the fireman to shake his fire without opening the doorand thus checking the draft from below.
Having thus described my invention,Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the UnitedStates- 1. .In' a fire-grate, the combination of the grate-bars D, mounted on rollers E, F, and G, and having flat heads H and I, and plate N on the belly-flange M, and provided withV-shaped projections L, of alternate height, projecting over the sides of the belly-flange M, with the shaking device, as set forth.
2. In a fire-grate, the combination of the shaking device, consisting of a shaft, S, journaled in bearings T, and provided in each end with a bell-crank, U and U, the bell-crank U having an actuating-handle, V, and both bellmetal or by dirt or ashes entering its bearings cranks having rods W W, provided with pit- In testimony thatI claim the foregoing asmy men X, fastened in their outer ends, with the own I have hereunto affixed. my signature in IO grate-bars D, as set forth. presence of two witnesses.
3. The grate-bar consistin of the heads H and I and belly-flange M, ha jving' upward V- PHILIP RICHARDS shaped projections, alternating in height and Witnesses: projectingoverits sides, substantially as shown THEO. REINEFELD,
and described. \V. S. PARSONS.
