FREDERICK MICHAEL AND JOHN W. FOWBLE, OF EATON, OHIO.
PERMUTATION-IPADLOCK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 268,922, dated December 12, 1882,
Application filed June 29, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK MICHAEL and JOHN W. FowBLE, of Eaton, in the county of Preble and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Combination- Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 7
The object of the invention is to improve a padlock, as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved combination-lock, with a part of the case broken out. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of thelock as represented in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bar which slides in the case. Fig. l is a perspective view of one of the tumblers, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the head of a tumbler, constructed to be shifted in the tumbler for changing the combination.
\Ve make a long case, a, preferably of rectangular form, with a hollow space nearly through it longitudinally, into which suitable perforations are made at b for the heads 0 of the tumblers (Z to project, as shown in Fig. 1, and around each perforation is a dial, 6, marking and numbering the divisions of the circle.
The tumblers consist of the hollow cylinder (1, partly or wholly closed at one end, and having a slot, f, through one side, also having head 0, with a many-sided base, g, adapted for connection to the tumbler by tittingin its correspondingly-shaped opening or cavity It, so that it may be shifted from time to time to change the combination when desired.
The bar 2', which is to be inserted and secured in the hollow space of the case, is considerably smaller than the hollow of the case, so as to slide into it with the tumblers d between its side and one of the sides of the case. It is provided with studsj, which are to enter the tumbler-cavities through slots f and pass out again beyond said tumblers, which are to be shifted therefor, to lock the bar. Said bar also has cavities k in the head for the ends of the hasp l, as shown, and the top of the case has cavities m to allow the head of the bolt, with the hasp in it, to drop below the end of the case sufficiently to confine the hasp in the cavities of the head by thecase.
The heads 0 of the tumblers have nicks in them to insert a screwdriver or other thin blade for turning them; or they may have square heads for a socket-key, to set the slots said heads may have special pointers for the purpose. I
It will be seen from the foregoing description that the operator, knowing the relations of the nicks or pointers, to the-slotsf, may readily set the tumblers by them, first to let the studs j enter the tumblers, and next to pass out of them on the other side, each tumbler being required to be set twice to enable each stud to pass it. in this case we have represented three tumblers in a line along the lock and as many studsj; but we may employ more or less, and we may also employ one or more series of the same on one or more of the other sides of the case and bar, if desired, for greater security.
The construction is very simple, and yet the locks cannotbe picked, the open end of the case being efiectually closed by the shoulder a of the head of the bar.
The manner of changing the combinations by shifting the changeable heads of the tumblers is also a simple device for the purpose.
Thelock may be of round, half-round, oval or other form, and one or more bolt-bars i may be used, which bars may be fitted to work in either the end or side of the case, all as best suited for any particular location or use of the lock.
, Havingthusfullydescribed ourinvention,we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- In a permutation-padlock, the combination,
with a case having theperforat-ions band dials e, of the hollow tumblers (1, having a side slot, f, and opening h, the projecting nicked heads 0, having a polygonal part, 9, to fit the opening it, and the slide-bar 6, having studs j, all constructed and arranged with respect to each other as shown and described.
