SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,523, dated December 5, 1882,

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSIAH Museum, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Electric Device for Operatin g the Throttle-Valve of an Engine or its equivalent in other Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to enable an engine or other machine'to be stopped from any point or points in the factory; and it consists in the application of an electro-magnet arranged to sustain the mechanism by which the throttle-valve or other cut-off is operated, and provided with a key or keys, by which the current is broken in order to release the operating mechanism sustained by the electro-magnet.

B is an armature or lever, pivoted at O, and having its weighted end B set at such-an angle to its pivot that when not held up by the electro-magnet A it will fall into a slanting position.
O is a short lever or tail-piece attached to the pivoted end of the lever B.
D is a pivoted lever, one end of which extends below the lever B in such a manner that when it falls the tail-piece C will come in contact with it, and by thus throwing down the end of the lever D below it raises the other end of the lever, which till then fits over the catch or pin formed on the weighted lever E. This lever E is also pivoted, and has also-a tail-piece, E, which is designed to come in contact with the end of the pawl-F when the lever E falls on being released'from the lever D. The action of the tail-piece E upon the pawl F raises the pawl clear of the teeth of the ratchet-wheel G. This ratchet-wheel is attached to or formed upon the spool G, around which the rope or chain H is wound, which rope is provided with a weight, H. The said spool will therefore be caused to revolve by the action of the weight when the pawl is lifted clear of the pawl.

The end of the rope H remote from the weight H is connected to the throttle-lever or its equivalent, and, as a consequence, when the pawl F is thrown clear of 5 the ratchet-teeth, and the weight H" thus permitted to act upon the rope H, the throttle-lever or its equivalent is correspondingly acted upon, the rope being so set as to cause the throttle to be closed by the action of the rope. A spiral spring, I, is placed in the rope H, so as to relieve the throttle-valve from any sudden strain caused by the weight. In describing the application of my invention I have shown in the mechanism two weighted levers, with a horizontal lever placed to transmit the movement of the lever held by the electro-magnet to the lever for operating I have thus arranged the mechanism in order to enable the use of a very small battery only sufliciently strong to sustain the small weighted armature-leverB in an upright position. The two levers B E-might of course be dispensed with and the electro-magnet made sufficiently strong to sustain the large weighted lever; but I think it will be found preferable to arrange the levers as I. have shown.
From this description it will be seen that an engine may be instantly stopped from any point in the building, keys to operate the electro-magnet being placed at various points in the building, so that in case of an accident any employ nearest to one of the keys can instantl y arrest the movement of the machinery.
What I claim as my invention is l. The herein-described device for operating throttle-valves, which consists essentially in a rotating drum and suitable stop-pawl, a rope or chain connected directly to the throttle-valve and passing around said drum, and provided with suitable actuating-weight at its free end, a tripping-lever, and pivoted retaining-catch, and an electro-inagnet having a pivoted armature adapted to engage the free end of the pivoted catch, and thereby release the stop-pawl tripping-lever when said armature is released by the interruption of the current in the electro -magnet, substantially as described.
