Nrrnn STATES PATENT QFFICE.
LOUIS K. JOHNSON AND A. AUGUSTUS LOW, OF BROOKLYN, N. Y.
TYPE-CONTAINING CHANNEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,409,.dated December 5, 1882.
Application filed March 31, 1882. (No model.)
States, residing in the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Containing Channels, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to that class of typecontaining channels which is employed in connection with type and space holders or cases,
similar to those designated in the patentsheretofore granted to Louis K. Johnson, in which the types and spaces are arranged in a prescribed manner in containing-channels, which are supported in seats in a common frame or bank, the types and spaces being removed by hand from the lower ends of the containing-channels, through transverse openings between their lower front walls and the type-supporting shoulders.
Our invention consists, primarily, in a typecontaining channel formed at its lower extremity with an adjustable type-supporting shoulder or floor, secured to and constituting a part of it, and, secondarily, in the special arrangement and construction of parts herein shown and described for effecting and maintaining the relative adjustment between the type-supporting shoulder and the lower edge of the front wall of the channel.
The object of making the type-supporting shoulder or floor adjustable is to adapt the channel to types and spaces of any thickness, according to the style and denomination to be accommodated. By providing for this adjustment, and the means for maintaining it entirely upon the channel itself, we render the channel more safe and convenient to handle and transfer when full of type and avoid such danger of irregularity or displacement of type, owing to carelessness or inaccuracy in placing the channels in their seats in the case, as is liable to occur where boththe channel and its contained column of type are supported independently by the seats.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the lower extremity of one of our improved containing-channels; Fig. 2, an edge view of the same; Fig.3, a rear view of the same; Fig. 4, an isometricalperspective, from the front side, of the several parts detached; Fig. 5, a similar view from the rear side.
The containing-channel O is ofordinary construction, except that its lower extremity is adapted to receive the adjustable type support or shoulder S. The latter may be secured to the channel in any convenient manner that will permit of its adjustment. with relation to the lower front edge.. e, of the channel. In the construction shown in the drawings the type-shoulder S is mounted upon a screw, 8, which engages with a female screw-thread formed in the spine 0 of the containing-channel, by which means it may be raised nearer to or lowered away from the lower edge, 0, of the front wall of the channel. 1
In order to insure and maintain the desired relative positions of the parts when accurately adjusted, we employ a set-screw, t, attached to the rear side of the type-supporting shoulder and bearing against the rear wall of the containing-channel, which is formed with a longitudinal slot, at, at this point to accommodate the shank of the screw. In fact, if preferred, the type-supporting shoulder S may be adjusted and supported entirely through the medium of the set-screw t, the longitudinal slot to permitting a sufficient degree of adjustment.
It is obvious that the adjusting and supporting screw 8, instead of engaging with a screw-thread formed in the spine 0, may be a simply shouldered therein, so as to turn freely upon its axis without advancing, while a female screw-thread formed in the bearin g s of the supporting-shoulder S will cause the latter to rise or descend, according to the direction in which the screw is turned.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A type-containing channel substantially such as and for the purpose designated, formed with a type-supporting shoulder, which is adjustable upon and with relation to the lower extremity of the said channel, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a type-containing channel substantially such as herein designated, the adjusting and supporting screw 8, engaging with the spine of the containing-channel, in combination with the type-supporting shoulder S, edge of the front wall, and the longitudinal 10 mounted thereon, and the lower edge of the slot u, formed in the rear Wall of the said front wall of thecontaining-channel, substanchannel, substantially in the manner and for ti ally in the manner and for the purpose (lethe purpose described.
scribed, LOUIS K. JOHNSON.
3. In a type-containing channel substan- A, AUGUSTUS LOW. tially such as herein designated, the set-screw 1, attached to the type-supporting shoulder S, in combination with the latter and the lower Witnesses:
