ADJUSTABLE FUNNEL HOLDER.
Patented Nov. 28, 1882.

WITNBS N, PETERS. FhulD-Mhogrl' P il'- Was uqun. DJ;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. JOHNSON, or SMYRNA, AND JAMES s. JOHNSON, OE MOORE- FIELD,
OHIO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,239, dated November 28, 1882.
Application filed April 6, 18853.
(No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN R. JOHNSON, of Smyrna, in the county of Harrison and State ofOhio, and JAMES S. JOHNSON, ot'Moorefield, in the county of Harrison and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful lmprovement in Adjustable Funnel-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
RBIBI'HIUB is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding p lItS in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, taken through the line x m, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same, taken through the line 3 y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of the funnel socket, arm, and arm-holder.
The object of this invention is to promote convenience in filling sacks, bags, and other packages of dilferent sizes; and to this end it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
A represents a platform of any convenient size, and which may be mounted upon wheels or rollers, if desired.
To the rear end of the platform A, or to an upright casing, B, attached to the said rear end, is secured an upright bar or plate, 0, which divides the casing B into two compartments.
In the space between the forward wall of the casing B and the upright O is placed a rising and falling block, D, to which is attached an arm, E, which projects through a vertical slot, B, in the front side of the casing B, and has a socket or frame, F, formed upon or attached to its outer end, to receive and hold the funnel or hopper G. The socket F may he made square to receive a square hopper or funnel G, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or it may be made round, as shown in Fig. 4, to
receive a round funnel or hopper. The arm E can be permanently attached to the armholder D, as shown in Fig. 2; or the said arm may be curved or arched and its inner end inserted in keepers attached to the arm-holder D, as shown in Fig. 4. The latter construction allows the arm E to be readily detached for convenience in transportation.
To the upper end of the arm-holder D is atsaid shaft J is revolved to wind the cord H upon the shaft J, and thus raise the holder 1) and its arm and socket E F. As the crank K is turned in the other direction the holder D,
.the arm E, and the socket F descend by their own weight. To the crank-shaftJ is attached a ratchet-wheel, L, the teeth of which engage a pawl, M, pivoted to the casing B, to support thearm'holder D in any position into which it may be adjusted. With this construction, by turning the crank K the holder D, the arm E, and the socket F can be easily raised and lowered to adjust the funnel or hopper G into such a-position as the height of the packages to be filled may require.
Our improvement may be made small to adapt it for use by druggists, grocers, and others in filling small packages, or of large size to adapt it for use by farmers and others for filling grain-sacks and other large packages.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. 'In'a funnel-holder, the combination, with the vertically-slotted casing B, of the block D,sliding in waysin thesaid casing, the arm E, secured to the said block and projecting through the slot of the casing, and provided with the funnel socket or ring F on its outer end, and means, substantially as herein shown and described, for raising said block, as set forth.
2. In a funnel-holder, the combination, with the casing B, divided into two compartments by the upright bar O, and provided with the vertical slot B, of the sliding block D, the funnel-socket arm E, the rOpeH, the pulley I, the shaft J, the ratchet L, and pawl M, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN RUFUS JOHNSON. JAMES S. JOHNSON.
