UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED D. TINGLEY, OF NEW YORK, f. Y.
FEED-BOX FOR STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,150, dated November 28, 1882.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED D. TINGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Boxes for Stock;
' and I do hereby declare the following to be a consists of a flexible reversible feed and watering cup or box and means for operating the same, by which stock can be watered and fed while in the car without requiring any change whatever in the form or construction of the ordinary stock-cars now in general use.
The improvement is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the same, showingits appearance and position when located along the side of a track and on one side of car; and Fig. 2, a detail view.
My present form of feed-boxes may be used in connection with a swinging frame and its attachments, which form the subject of anoth or application .for Letters Patent filed by me March 25, 1882. In the present application, however, the form of frame is different, and there is only retained the idea of the independ ent lateral and vertical movement of the feedboxes, the means of connecting the water-pipe with the feed-cups by separateflexible pipes, and the cut-off mechanism.
A A represent posts located at a convenient position along either side of a cartrack, which are firmly planted in the ground or on a suitable platform or supports and securely braced, and on which are rigidly mounted a central rod, D, and an upper main water-pipe, I. 1
L represents my present form of feed-box, which is composed of stout canvas drawn over and fastened around a flat metallic rim, m. This rim may be made of gas-pipe; but I prefer the flat form.
the metallic rim, or bolted, as shown, to and between the ends of the metallic rim m. At their outerends the rods 0 are provided with hand-holds s to assist in the manipulation of the feed-boxes. l
H represents a block arranged to slide on center rod, D, and held thereon by hoop-bands '6 i. It is provided with a lateral central slot, in the outer end of which is pivoted a cam-lever, 1, and also with a grooved loose block, 12, held within the slot by the cam-lever and one of the bands'i. The handleOis passed through this slot, which is grooved at its rear end to conform to the contour of the handle and confined to its place in said slot by the pressure of cam-lever l on block 11.. The cam-lever is made to fit with suflicient tightness in the block that when pressed against block 2 it will hold the handle 0 in place without further means of restraint. The cam-lever is also shown provided with a small hole at its outer end for the insertion of the bent end of a suitable handle, so that the lever can be operated by an at-- tendantstanding at the side of the frame. The under side of the block H is also grooved to bear upon the central rod, D. The space between the undersideof the block and the bands iis made sufliciently great to permit the blocks to be given a rolling motion, so that the handles O and feed-boxes can be tipped up or down, as may be necessary in pushing the feedboxes in and out between the slats at any height. i I
G and E are rests for the feed-box handles, mounted on suitable supports, 1 2 3 4. O and E are situated at a distance from and a number of inches lower than the central rod in order to support the feed-boxes when they are pushed into a car at points lower or higher than the central rod. The feed-boxes are provided'with overflow-pipes r, running through i the rim m, which, when the boxes are pushed into the car, will extend outside of the car and permit the overflow of water to run out of the car instead of in it, thus keeping the ear dry.
I is a main water-conducting pipe extending the whole length of the frame and held inv brackets on the top of posts A, and attached to said pipe and leading to the feed-boxes are supplementary flexible pipes t," asand for the Oisagas-pipeha-ndlescrewedintoorthrough l purpose described in my previous. patent.
Vh'en it is desired to use a portion only of the water-cups the water can be out off from the remaining ones by the use of a cut-off, R, located at the junction of each flexible pipe with the main pipe.
When it is desired to feed the stock several quarts of feed are placed in each of the boxes L, (but not enough to fill it to its utmost capacity,) which, by reason of the flexible material of the box, can then be pushed through between the slats of an ordinary stock-car without spilling any of the contents, and carried directly under the head of the animal to be fed. The box and handle are then held securely in place by swinging the lever l against the block pp hen it is necessaryio water the stock lever l is released, the feed-box handle turned, which reverses the flexible box L, and water is admitted from main conducting pipe and flexible pipes. As some animals refuse to drink water contaminated with feed, a supply of clean pure water is thus provided. It is apparent, however, that these flexible boxes can be used both for feeding and watering, if desired, Without reversing the same, in which case the locking mechanism can be dis pensed with, and a lateral sliding block with simply an aperture through it to accommodate the movement of the handle can be used, as shown in my pending application before mentioned.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a stock-car feeding device, the sliding, flexible, and reversible feed and water box, substantially as described.
2. The combination of said flexible feed-box with sliding block H, provided with lever l and block 19, substantially as described.
3. The combination of flexible feed-box and handles, the lateral independent moving and rolling or tilting support-blocks and their supports, the main water and conducting pipe, and the flexible connecting-pipes, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED D. TINGLEY.
